Sun Devils have top-ranked class for second time under head coach Pat Murphy

(Tempe, AZ) – Baseball America released its annual recruiting rankings today, and Arizona State University’s 2009 class was ranked the No. 1 class in the nation.

It is the second time that ASU has had the top-ranked recruiting class in head coach Pat Murphy’s tenure, with 1995 being the other class to be named No. 1 in the country.

The Sun Devils have 21 newcomers joining the team in 2009, 12 of whom have been selected in the Major League Baseball draft. The class features 15 freshmen and six junior college transfers, and three of those were named junior college All-Americans (OF/LHP Kole Calhoun, IF Jared McDonald and LHP Josh Spence).

Riccio Torrez, IF, 32nd round, Arizona Diamondbacks

Carlos Ramirez, C, 34th round, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2007 draft)

Johnny Ruettiger, OF, 35th round, Texas Rangers

Jared McDonald, IF, 40th round, Chicago Cubs

Jordan Swagerty, C/RHP, 44th round, Colorado Rockies
