SoCal Roundup: Tight Finishes

With a pair of Pac-12 games going extra innings and all but two other Southern California squads competing in games decided by two runs or less, Sunday was a day of tight action.

Only two series ended in sweeps, but was it UC Irvine, Washington, Pepperdine or Long Beach State that was able to take off the final game? And who won the rubber matches in the remaining series?

SoCal Roundup: Finding a Way

A number of Southern California squads had obstacles to overcome on Friday, but some were able to find a way to win, which is the name of the game once you get to this point in the season.

San Diego had a pair of heavily offensive innings, but was it enough on the road at San Francisco? UCLA and Arizona State’s aces struggled out of the gate, but one got better and led his team to victory. Find out who survived the battle.

UC Santa Barbara and San Diego State had their offenses get shut down, but one team was able to find a way to win. And Cal State Fullerton was on the road at Wichita State and without offensive leader Matt Chapman. Could the Titans get Thomas Eshelman enough offensive support?

2014 Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll

Pac12LogoWALNUT CREEK, Calif. — In a polling of the Pac-12’s baseball coaches, defending Conference champion OREGON STATE has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the conference title again this season. The Cardinal received nine of 10 possible first-place votes and 98 points. Oregon State finished the 2013 campaign with a 52-12 record and advanced to the College World Series where they finished the year tied for third. The Beavers, led by preseason All-Americans Michael Conforto, Dylan Davis, Andrew Moore, Ben Wetzler and Scott Schultz, enter the season as a consensus top-5 team in the national rankings. Pac 12 Weekend Preview May 24/25/26

Pac12LogoWashington State at Oregon State

The final series of the Pac-12 for Oregon State and Washington State takes place at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. The Beavers hold a two game lead atop the conference with a three-game series against the Cougars left on the schedule. Washington State comes into the weekend with a 22-30 record. They are 8-19 in the Pac-12. The Cougars were swept by rival Washington last weekend, and then defeated Portland 1-0 during the midweek game. Oregon State, ranked No. 3 by the NCWBA, holds a 43-9 overall record. They are 22-5 in the Pac-12. The Beavers are coming off winning the series at Oregon last weekend. The Beavers and Ducks were also slated to play a midweek game, but it was cancelled due to the weather. With the win last weekend, the Beavers pretty much wrapped up a national seed and put themselves in perfect position to win the Pac-12.

Series Prediction: Oregon State sweeps Washington State.

Pac 12 Weekend Recap for May 10/11/12

Oregon State at Stanford

Oregon State traveled to Stanford over the weekend and delivered a knockout blow to the Cardinal’s chances of playing in the postseason. In game one on Friday, Oregon State defeated Stanford 7-3. The Beavers tagged Appel to the tune of five earned runs in five innings. Appel also had five walks. Beaver starter Matt Boyd picked up his 10th win of the year after pitching 6 and 1/3 innings of three-run ball. Right fielder Dylan Davis knocked in three RBI, while second baseman Andy Peterson had three hits to lead the Beavers.
