Pac 12 Weekend Preview May 3-5

The Bears travel to Corvallis this weekend to take on the Beavers at Goss Stadium. California comes into the weekend 21-23 overall and 9-12 in the Pac-12. They are coming off a 13-2 victory against Pacific on Tuesday, and a series victory last weekend against Washington. Oregon State is 34-8 and 14-4 in the Pac-12. Ranked No. 5 in the latest NCWBA poll, the Beavers are coming off a series sweep last weekend against USC. Look for Oregon State to continue their winning ways, especially at home. The Beavers are 17-3 this season at Goss Stadium, while California is 10-13 on the road. Continue reading

Pac 12 Weekend Preview April 26/27/28

The Trojans travel to Goss Stadium in Corvallis this weekend to take on Oregon State. USC comes into the weekend 16-23 and 8-10 in the Pac-12. They took two out of three last weekend against Utah, in a series in which the Trojans rebounded from a shutout on Friday night. Oregon State had a disappointing series last weekend, in which the Beavers lost two out of three against Washington. The Beavers return home ranked No. 6 in the latest NCWBA poll. They are 31-8 and 11-4 in the Pac-12. Oregon State defeated Seattle University 4-3 in 14 innings on Monday. Look for Oregon State to rebound this weekend, as the Beavers are 14-3 overall and 5-1 in conference at Goss Stadium this season. Even with their hiccup in Washington last weekend, the Beavers still lead the Pac-12 with a 2.07 ERA. USC, on the other hand, ranks last in conference with a 4.80 ERA. Continue reading


Pac 12 Weekend Recap for April 19/20/21

The Beavers missed a golden opportunity this weekend to put some separation between them and the rest of the conference. The Washington Huskies were able to take two of out three from the Beavers this weekend after Friday’s game was postponed due to rain. In game one on Saturday, Jared Fisher picked up his first win of the season after pitching seven innings of no-run ball. Fisher only allowed five hits, while striking out two and walking one as Washington defeated Oregon State 5-1. It was a major win for Washington as the Husky bats got to Beaver starter Matt Boyd. Boyd allowed four runs, three earned, in six innings. Five different Huskies drove in an RBI, while designated hitter Michael Camporeale led the way for the Huskies with three hits. The Beavers Ryan Barnes did not get a hit, ending his 11-game hit streak. Continue reading

The Oregon State Beavers travel north this weekend to take on the Washington Huskies in a series that pits the first place Beavers against the last place Huskies. Oregon State arrives in Seattle ranked No. 6 in the latest NCWBA poll. The Beavers are 29-6 and 10-2 in conference play. They defeated Portland during a midweek matchup by a final of 5-1. The Beavers are also coming off a three-game sweep against Utah last weekend. The Washington Huskies enter the weekend with a 9-25 record. They are 3-9 in conference play. The Huskies dropped a midweek game to Seattle University by a final of 10-4. Washington also dropped the series against Stanford last weekend. This should be a series in which Oregon State adds to their conference wins record. The Beaver weekend starting staff is 5-1 with a 1.49 ERA over the last two conference weekends. They have allowed seven earned runs in 42 and 1/3 innings, while striking out 36 and walking 14. The Huskies, and their tenth place team batting average of .252, could be in for a long weekend. Pac 12 Weekend Recap for April 12/13/14

Oregon State improved to 10-2 in the Pac-12 conference after a three-game sweep of Utah this weekend. In the three games, Oregon State outscored Utah 13-4. In game one on Friday, Oregon State scored a run in the first inning after shortstop Tyler Smith, who returned to the starting lineup after being out since March 17, singled down the right field line. He would eventually score the lone run on a Dylan Davis sac-fly as Oregon State beat Utah 1-0. Starter Matt Boyd improved to 7-1 after throwing a complete-game two-hitter. He struck out eight and only allowed two hits. Continue reading


Pac-12 Weekend Preview April 12/13/14

The Utah Utes travel to Goss Stadium over the weekend to take on the No. 7 ranked Beavers. Utah enters the weekend 14-14 and 4-8 in conference play. Last weekend, Utah was able to take two out of three against Washington State. The Utes Tuesday game against BYU was postponed. Oregon State is 15-6 and 7-2 in conference play. The Beavers took two out of three last weekend against UCLA, but then lost the midweek game against state rival Oregon by a final of 6-3. This should be a series in which the Beavers should dominate. Oregon State sits atop the conference in team ERA with a 1.95 ERA. Utah, on the other hand, ranks sixth in the conference with a 3.74 ERA. Look for the combination of Boyd, Moore, and a healthy improving Wetzler to control the series. It will also be interesting to see if the Beavers get back shortstop Tyler Smith. He has been out with a hand injury for a couple weeks. Continue reading

Oregon State took two out of three this weekend at UCLA in a series between two teams aiming for a conference championship. In game one, the Bruins handed LHP Matt Boyd (6-1) his first loss of the season. Boyd was outdueled by RHP Adam Plutko (3-2), who pitched seven innings and only allowed one unearned run. Both teams struggled offensively as Oregon State had four hits and UCLA had five. With the score tied 1-1 in the fifth inning, designated hitter Kevin Williams hit his first home run of the season to give UCLA a 2-1 lead. They would add another run in the seventh, and closer David Berg picked up his sixth save of the season by pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball in relief. The final was 3-2 UCLA. Pac 12 Weekend Preview April 5/6/7

One of the biggest matchups across the country this weekend takes place at Jackie Robinson Stadium, as the No. 8 ranked Beavers matchup against the No.11 ranked Bruins. Oregon State enters the weekend 23-4 and 5-1 in the Pac-12. The Beavers defeated Portland by a final of 7-5 on Tuesday, but the Beavers dropped two out of three last weekend at San Diego. In the series, the Beaver defense struggled as they committed 11 errors in three games. UCLA holds an 18-7 record and the Bruins are 6-3 in conference. UCLA is coming off a Tuesday loss to No. 4 Cal State Fullerton by a final of 9-6. The Bruins also dropped two out of three last weekend at Arizona State. This series should be an excellent display of talent as both teams rank in the upper half of the conference in most major categories. Oregon State holds a conference best 1.90 team ERA, while UCLA sits at fourth with a 2.73 ERA. Offensively, the Beavers sit third in the conference with a .287 team batting average. UCLA sits seventh with a .264 average. A few notes to keep an eye out for this series is how well Oregon State plays defense. The Beavers sit seventh in the conference with a .967 fielding percentage after last weekend’s series. UCLA ranks second with a .979 fielding percentage. Oregon State has committed 35 errors, while UCLA has only committed 21. The difference in the series could come down to how well the Beavers catch the ball. Shortstop Tyler Smith is expected back after missing a few weeks with a fractured hand. Continue reading

A big weekend for Arizona State, as the Sun Devils took two out of three from UCLA. RHP Trevor Williams pitched 7 and 2/3 innings, while only allowing one run, in the 4-1 Sun Devil victory. Williams struck out six and walked one as the junior improved to 4-2 on the year. Arizona State had RBI contributions from four Sun Devils, including third baseman Michael Benjamin, who hit his second home run of the year. Continue reading
