NCBWA Releases 2011 Stopper of the Year Watch List

Wichita, Kan. (NCBWA) — Forty-five players have been named to the initial watch list for the seventh annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Tuesday.

2011 Big South Preseason Poll Released

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – For the fourth consecutive year, Coastal Carolina University’s baseball team has been voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office.  In addition, the coaches voted Chanticleers’ redshirt-junior second baseman Tommy La Stella (Closter, N.J.) the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year and Coastal Carolina junior Anthony Meo (Cranston, R.I.) the League’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

2011 CBD Season Preview: Big South

The Big South was dominated last year by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers as they went a perfect 25-0 on their way to the conference regular season title. The Liberty Flames came in second with a 19-8 conference mark. Radford finished in third place with a 15-11 record in the conference only a ½ game ahead of High Point for third place. VMI and Winthrop tied for fifth place with a 13-14 record while Gardner-Webb and UNC-Asheville tied for seventh with a 10-17 mark. Presbyterian College finished in ninth place with a 7-20 record while Charleston Southern rounded out of the conference with a 6-20 record. Continue reading

Daniel Latham added to VMI Coaching Staff

Latham LEXINGTON, Va. – Daniel Latham, former assistant coach at High Point and 15th-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins, has been named the new assistant coach for VMI baseball, according to information released by the program Monday. Latham’s primary responsibilities will be developing and mentoring the Keydet pitchers.

Ryan Mau added to Navy’s Coaching Staff

RyanMauVMI ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy baseball head coach Paul Kostacopoulos announced Thursday (Aug. 19) the addition of Ryan Mau to the coaching staff. As an assistant coach, Mau will work with the Mids’ pitchers and comes to the Naval Academy after five seasons at VMI.

"We are very excited to have Ryan here at Navy," said Kostacopoulos. "He brings a great deal of enthusiasm and talent to not only our program, but to the entire Naval Academy."

Big South Announces Seedings For Baseball Championship

(www.BigSouthSports.com) – For the fourth consecutive season and the fifth time in the last six years, Coastal Carolina is the No. 1 seed in the Royal Purple Big South Baseball Championship, which will be contested May 25-29 at The Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C.  The Chanticleers, ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation in three polls this week, won the outright 2010 regular-season championship with a 25-0 Conference mark to become just the second team in Big South history to go undefeated in the Conference season, joining the 1988 Coastal Carolina club that finished 15-0.  Coastal Carolina’s 25 Big South wins has set the League’s single-season record, and the Chanticleers have won their fifth regular-season Big South baseball crown in six years and sixth in nine seasons.

ATLANTA – Tony Plagman belted two of Georgia Tech’s four home runs and Brandon Cumpton scattered four hits over six scoreless innings to lead the sixth-ranked Yellow Jackets (42-10) to a 9-3 win over Georgia State (31-21-1) Tuesday at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Jackets improved to 12-1 against in-state opponents with the win, and closed out the regular season home schedule winning seven of their last eight at Russ Chandler. Tech has won seven of its last eight games overall.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia baseball team, ranked No. 1 this week by Baseball America, stopped No. 10 Coastal Carolina’s 17-game winning streak with a 6-3 victory over the Chanticleers Tuesday at Davenport Field. Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) hit a second-inning grand slam, which proved to be all the offense the Cavaliers needed behind the strong pitching of Branden Kline (Fr., Frederick, Md.), Tyler Wilson (Jr., Midlothian, Va.) and Kevin Arico (Jr., Flemington, N.J.).

Virginia (35-9) ran its winning streak to six games and gave head coach Brian O’Connor his 300th career win at UVa. O’Connor is in his seventh season at the helm of the Cavaliers.

LEXINGTON, Va. - The top five hitters in the lineup went 10 for 21 with 10 RBIs as No. 26 VMI defeated No. 1 Virginia, 12-3, in front of a record crowd of 1,463 fans at Gray-Minor Stadium Wednesday night.  The win is VMI’s first-ever over a top-ranked opponent and improves the Keydets to 29-5 on the season.  The Cavaliers fall to 27-8 with the loss, the team’s first mid-week setback in 10 games this season.
