South Carolina LHP Wes Cook will not be a member of the baseball team in 2011 after failing to meet academic standards to be eligible for the spring semester. He was a incoming transfer from Central Alabama Junior College where he went 8-3 with a 3.49 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 111 innings last season while as a freshman went 10-0 while averaging 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings. The last two weeks we have started to see news start to leak out about a couple of Cal Baseball players starting to make their transfer plans for the spring semester. The biggest news was that Eric Jaffe is expected to become a member of the UCLA baseball team at the end of the semester break after being a 19th round selection by the Oakland A’s in the 2010 MLB Draft. Update #1: I have been able to confirm with an independent source that Eric Jaffe will be transferring to UCLA pending a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible this season.
According to a tweet from Keith Law of ESPN.com, Cal freshman RHP/1B Eric Jaffe is likely transferring to UCLA at the end of the semester. The Oakland (CA) native was selected in the 19th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox out of Bishop O’Dowd High School. This move by UCLA adds a potent bat and an impact pitcher for the next three seasons. He will need a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible this season which is not out of the question. Continue reading
The Miami Hurricanes started practice on Thursday after having a disappointing 2010 season which saw them implode against Florida making seven errors including three in the final two innings to miss out on a spot in the College World Series. They will need to replace their entire rotation from 2010 and probably the best hitting catcher in the country in Yasmani Grandal. They also lost starting second baseman Frankie Ratcliff who was suspended from school after being a drug incident back on September 9th when he was found with 101 grams of Marijuana and and 19 vials of HGH. Former St. Mary’s College LHP Dylan Chavez is currently visiting schools as he nears a decision where he will continue his collegiate career. Chavez spent his freshman season in 2010 with St. Mary’s College in California where he appeared in 18 games (2 starts) while going 1-1 with a 6.15 ERA in 26.1 innings pitched. He has transferred to American River College for this coming spring but is currently looking at Ole Miss, Miami (FL), Oregon, Oregon State, and Arizona State for the 2012 season.
USC’s Cade Kreuter will be transferring to the University of Miami to continue his college career according to his twitter page and InsideUSC.com. He appeared in 53 games (45 starts) hitting .283 with eight homers and 24 RBI. This move was expected as Kreuter’s father Chad was fired on August 9th by Southern California after four unsuccessful seasons. (FULL ARTICLE)
Alabama backup catcher and former South Carolina quarterback Chris Smelley has left Alabama to pursue professional opportunities outside of baseball. He started his college career at South Carolina where he played three seasons under Steve Spurrier as a quarterback before deciding to transfer to Alabama. (FULL ARTICLE) He played in 21 games for the Gamecocks during his career. He was 5 and 4 as a starter in 2008 and 9 and 6 in 15 career starts. He completed 169 of 302 passes for 1,922 yards and 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions during the 2008 campaign. This past season at Alabama on the diamond, he appeared in only 16 games (10 starts) hitting .152.
The LSU pitching staff has been hammered with injuries, transfers, and players signing with MLB teams. The Tigers have lost three pitchers to Tommy John surgery this summer with Jordan Rittiner and Joey Bourgeois will miss next season after undergoing Tommy John surgery this summer. There is an outside chance Left-hander Chris Garrett will be back in April according to a Paul Mainieri in a report from The Times-Picayune. Matulis will join former LSU assistant Terry Rooney at Central Florida while Mitch Moorman will head to Wichita State to play under legendary head coach Gene Stephenson.
Wes Dorrell who is entering his last year of baseball eligible has decided to leave Big West member Cal Poly for NAIA member Fresno Pacific. According to an article in The Tribune out of San Luis Obispo CA, Dorrell had a falling out with head coach Larry Lee. Dorrell stated the following about his transfer “A fallout with Cal Poly coach Larry Lee, a conflict of interest, to put it in the best words possible.” Larry Lee refutes this claim by stating in the article that there was never a fallout with Dorrell in his eyes.
Chris Smelley Joins UA Baseball Team
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama announced today that former South Carolina quarterback and three-time Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) state baseball champion Chris Smelley has been granted a waiver by the Southeastern Conference and will be eligible to play baseball for the Crimson Tide this season.
