FRISCO, Texas – After defending its title from a season ago, Texas State will again be the top seed in the 2010 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament when it begins Wednesday at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Bobcats claimed their fourth regular-season championship and second outright title on the final day of the regular season with a 34-20 overall record and a 23-10 mark in conference play.
FROM SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE RELEASE
Texas State can win the Southland Conference title outright with a victory Saturday against UT Arlington. The Bobcats can also earn a share of the regular-season championship in defeat provided that Northwestern State also loses in its series finale vs. Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions and Bobcats would finish with identical conference records in that scenario and while they would share the conference regular-season title, Southeastern would be the No. 1 seed in next week’s conference tournament since it won two of three games against Texas State earlier this season. Northwestern State can win an outright championship should it beat Southeastern on Saturday and Texas State lose. The eighth and final seed is still not determined entering the final day of the regular season. Nicholls leads UTSA by one game. A Colonels’ win or a Roadrunners’ loss puts Nicholls in the tournament. A Colonels’ loss and a UTSA win send the Roadrunners to Corpus Christi for the tournament since the Roadrunners own the tiebreaker between the teams by virtue of its regular-season sweep.
No. 29 Texas State 6, McNeese State 3
LAKE CHARLES, La. – Sophomore Mitchell Pitts earned his fifth win of the season Sunday afternoon at Cowboy Diamond after tossing seven complete innings and holding McNeese State to just one run off four hits while striking out four in No. 29 Texas State’s 6-3 series-clinching victory.
The Bobcats improved to 30-17 overall and 20-7 in Southland Conference action with its eighth league series of the season. Texas State holds a game-and-a-half lead over Stephen F. Austin (32-13, 18-8 Southland) in the league standings for first place.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Jason Mitchell threw a three-hit shutout and Preston Beck hit a walk-off double to lead UT Arlington to a 1-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin Friday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The victory puts the Mavericks (25-22, 17-8 Southland Conference) in second place in the conference with a narrow lead in the standings over the Lumberjacks (30-13, 16-8 Southland), who dropped just their fourth road game of the season (15-4).

BATON ROUGE, La. - Homers by right fielder Mikie Mahtook and first baseman Blake Dean erased a 5-4 deficit in the sixth inning and powered No. 15 LSU to a 9-5 victory over Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday night in Alex Box Stadium.
With the win, the Tigers (33-13) snapped a seven-game losing skid and improved to 10-1 this season in mid-week contests. Southeastern dropped to 33-14 with the loss.
LSU will be back in action this weekend when it hosts SEC foe Vanderbilt in a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m., in Alex Box Stadium.
The Wildcats were riding high 2 weeks ago with consecutive series victories, that is before they ran into UCLA’s Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer, and weren’t able to recover this past weekend as they were almost swept by USC when visiting Dedeaux Field this past weekend and squeaking out a late victory with a 6-run 8th inning. They travel to Tempe, where they were victorious in their last meeting 2 weeks ago, 4-2. Arizona State is 7-1 since, including their most impressive road sweep of UCLA this weekend. Zack MacPhee was sick with the flu in the last matchup, and Drew Maggi laid an egg at the plate. If these two can get on base effectively in Tuesday’s matchup, I see Arizona State taking this game handily.

Nicholls 5, Southeastern Louisiana 3
THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls junior left hander Clint Dempster delivered a dominant performance Friday night in a 5-3 win over Southeastern Louisiana in the opener of a three-game Southland Conference series. The junior struck out 16 and allowed just one earned run in turning in his third complete game of the season.
The Colonel defense committed a pair of costly errors that led to unearned runs in the first and second innings as the Colonels fell behind 2-0. However, Dempster took control the rest of the way. The Thibodaux native didn’t allow a runner to reach second base from the third through the sixth innings and fanned 16 Lion batters, bettering his previous career high of 11 set April 2 at UT Arlington.
