Saint Mary’s set to name Eric Valenzuela as Head Coach

EricValenzuelaMORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary’s director of athletics Mark Orr announced Wednesday that San Diego State pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Eric Valenzuela has been named as the 12th head coach of the Gaels baseball program.

“Eric brings a tremendous track record and level of experience that we feel is the perfect foundation to lead our baseball program to the heights we believe it is capable of,” Orr said. “We expect our baseball program to compete and win both on the field and in the classroom and Eric’s teams have been consistent high achievers in both of those areas. Jedd Soto resigns at St. Mary’s

“I have accepted Jedd’s resignation and would like to express appreciation for his service to the College and its student-athletes for the last decade,” said Orr. “Jedd has been a respected member of the SMC community and embodies the values of the College and its LaSallian traditions. 2013 West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll

WestCoastConference_thumb.jpgSAN BRUNO, Calif. – The University of San Diego has been selected to win the 2013 West Coast Conference baseball championship, in a preseason poll of the WCC’s nine head coaches. The Toreros earned six of eight possible first-place votes and 62 overall points in the poll. Last year’s West Coast Conference champion, Pepperdine University, earned 53 points and picked up two first place votes in the annual survey.  Continue reading

John Lally pitched seven strong innings for the win.LOS ANGELES — With the wind consistently blowing out to right field, Loyola Marymount reliever Aaron Griffin told his teammates that a fly ball would only have to be hit 250 feet and the wind would carry it beyond the right field wall that stretches from 330 feet down the line to 372 feet in the gap.

Junior catcher Colton Plaia apparently heeded Griffin’s words and hit a pitch 251 feet. With a runner on second in the seventh inning, Plaia knocked a Jordan Mills pitch just barely over the right field fence for a two-run homer. Continue reading

Colton Plaia had a monster day (3-5, HR, 5 RBI).LOS ANGELES — On March 3, Loyola Marymount junior catcher Colton Plaia (pictured left) was batting .167. Fellow junior Matt Lowenstein was hitting a woeful .103. But since then, the two have been tearing it up — both batting near .400.

The duo continued its hot hitting Friday afternoon in the Lions 9-4 win over Saint Mary’s in the West Coast Conference opener at Page Stadium.

Colin Welmon picked up the win.LOS ANGELES — Loyola Marymount manufactured nine runs on 11 hits in a 9-4 win over St. Mary’s to open the West Coast Conference schedule Friday afternoon at Page Stadium.

Colin Welmon moved to 4-1 on the season with eight effective innings while Matt Lowenstein and Colton Plaia both delivered two singles and an extra base hit. Plaia’s extra base knock was a two-run homer, helping him finish the game with five RBI.
