SAN DIEGO – San Diego State head baseball coach Tony Gwynn has died of cancer at 54.
Gwynn’s sweet left-handed swing made him one of San Diego’s best-loved athletes. He was nicknamed “Mr. Padre” during his 20-year major league career.
“For more than 30 years, Tony Gwynn was a source of universal goodwill in the national pastime, and he will be deeply missed by the many people he touched,” Major League Commissioner Bud Selig said.
Gwynn had been on a medical leave from his job as baseball coach at San Diego State, his alma mater, since late March. Agent John Boggs said Gwynn died Monday at a hospital in suburban Poway. Continue reading San Diego State coach Tony Gwynn Passes Away

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Senior Ben Wetzler pitched a complete-game four-hitter and Oregon State eliminated UNLV 6-1 on Sunday to remain in contention for the Corvallis Regional title.

LAFAYETTE, La. – The top-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team bounced back from a tough loss yesterday to roll to 9-2 win over San Diego State in an elimination game on Saturday at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field in the Lafayette Regional.

CORVALLIS, Ore. — UC Irvine exploded for five runs in the fifth inning and went on to defeat UNLV, 10-3, in the opening game of the NCAA Corvallis Regional at Goss Stadium Friday afternoon.
“It’s win number one in a regional, so we’re fired up to get that win,” said head coach Mike Gillespie. “It was a combination, as everyone in this room saw, of some big hits and a lot of opportunities. All coaches and all teams take the pledge to just give people three outs per inning, and there were a few free-bees this game, and we were able to capitalize on a few of them.”
