Conference USA Weekend Preview (May 19th-21st)

By: John Lockwood

Although the field is set for the 2011 Conference USA tournament to be held in Pearl, MS in two weeks, the battle for the CUSA regular season championship will be decided 80 miles down US-49 in Hattiesburg as the second-place Rice Owls take on first-place Southern Miss. Rice comes into this weekend one game behind the Golden Eagles in the standings, but both teams are guaranteed the top two seeds come May 25th. Spots three through seven are wide open however, as East Carolina and Houston both share 11-10 records while Tulane, UCF and Memphis all come in to the weekend at 10-11. UAB, who finished up their conference schedule last weekend by being swept by UCF, has the unfortunate distinction of playing the #1 seed in the 2011 Conference USA Baseball Championship presented by Trustmark. Marshall, after losing their series to Tulane, is the odd-man out. Nationally, although they are in second-place in CUSA, Rice climbs two spots this week to #17, while their first-place opponent this weekend drops to #20 after dropping their series on the road at Houston. Back in the top 30 as well is East Carolina, at #30, after going a perfect 4-0 last weekend. Continue reading Conference USA Weekend Preview (May 19th-21st)

Several key series unfolded this weekend as Conference USA finished up its second to last weekend of conference play this season. Houston stole two from visiting Southern Miss, leaving the Golden Eagles with just a one-game lead in the conference standings at a 15-6 record. Right behind them is Rice, who, with their series victory over visiting Memphis, improved to 14-7 in conference play. UCF solidified their spot in the Conference USA tournament, jumping up to a tie for fifth place after sweeping UAB in Birmingham over the weekend. Tied with UCF (as well as with Memphis) is Tulane, who were able to scrape together two wins in West Virginia, as they played an unconventionally scheduled three game set against Marshall. ECU absolutely destroyed visiting Delaware State, taking all three from the MEAC team by an average margin of just over eleven runs per game. Conference USA Weekend Recap (April 29th-May 1st)

This weekend in CUSA play was full of surprises, each one more unsuspecting than the next. The biggest—by far—came from Memphis, TN, where the best-hitting team in the conference (with the nation’s leading hitter) was outscored 20-4 in game two of their series against last-place Marshall, a series which the Herd took two of three from on the road. In Greenville, NC, as expected there were some terrific pitching performances in a series which involved the country’s top pitching staff—however they did not come from the nation’s top pitching team. In New Orleans—in the only series on the weekend which the home-team won—a team which has been plagued by injuries to its pitching staff outdueled one of the best pitching teams in the conference. And lastly, in Orlando, Conference USA’s worst-pitching team rallied behind the best pitching performance on the weekend to take it’s series from a team with the reigning CUSA/Louisville Slugger/ NCBWA National Hitter of the Week. Four teams entered this weekend tied for first in Conference USA, but only the Golden Eagles of #24 Southern Miss (30-9, 9-3) remain atop the standings thanks to a three game sweep of Marshall (15-23, 2-10) in Hattiesburg. The biggest shock from this weekend’s conference play came from the Deep South, where UAB (23-17, 8-7) surprised #19 Rice (28-16, 9-6)—and the rest of CUSA—by taking both games of Saturday’s double-header to knock the Owls out of first. UCF (26-15, 6-9) won their first series since the opening week of conference play, by taking two from the CUSA’s best hitting team, Memphis (24-17, 7-5), on the road. Elsewhere in conference play, the NCAA’s best pitching team, East Carolina (27-13, 8-7) took two of three while visiting Houston (20-21, 7-5), and Tulane (23-17, 4-8) dropped two of three from visiting Mountain West foe Utah in their non-conference bye week.
