UCLA/Stanford Head Coaches Discuss the Cardinal’s Series Win at UCLA

Kenny Diekroeger turns the double play.LOS ANGELES — In a big time Pac-12 conference matchup between the No. 12 UCLA Bruins and the No. 13 Stanford Cardinal, the Cardinal took the rubber match Sunday afternoon 7-2 for the series win at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

After UCLA (28-12, 12-9) took an early 2-0 lead, Stanford (28-11, 10-8) used a six-run fifth inning for the come-from-behind victory. Once it secured the lead, the Cardinal never relinquished thanks to five strong innings of relief from Sahil Bloom, who allowed only two hits enroute to his second win of the season.

Stanford’s Mark Marquess Talks with College Baseball Daily

Stanford is back on the winning track in the Pac-10 by knocking off UCLA and Gerrit Cole 7-4 Thursday night. Mark Appel threw seven strong innings, striking out six, giving up nine hits and three earned runs and walking three.  He was aided by three homeruns, including back to back shots in the 7th by Tyler Gaffney and Steven Piscotty.  Stanford is now 4-6 in the Pac-10 and and 18-12 overall.  After being swept last week by the red-hot Oregon State, the Cardinal look to be back on the winning track and look to hit their stride heading into the postseason.  CollegeBaseballToday.com’s Eric Sorenson and myself caught up with Stanford Head Coach Mark Marquess after the game, and you can check out the interview below. CBD Interview with Mark Marquess (Stanford)

We talked about everything from his returning senior catchers, to Austin Wilson, AJ Vanegas and Brian Ragira coming in, as well as his stellar returning sophomore class.
