Manhattan releases 2012 Schedule

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – First year head coach Jim Duffy released the 2012 schedule for the Manhattan baseball team on Thursday. The out-of-conference slate includes matchups with powerhouse teams from the Big East, ACC, Mountain West, Sun Belt, and Big South along with the difficult MAAC contests for the defending conference champions. Manhattan set to name Jim Duffy as Head Coach

Manhattan will name current Seton Hall assistant coach Jim Duffy as their next head coach of the Jaspers baseball program according to CBD sources. Duffy is a 1996 graduate of Seton Hall and has spent parts of seven season as an assistant coach with the Pirates. Duffy played at Seton Hall from 1992-96 and signed a free agent contract with the Houston Astros in 1997. He played three seasons in the Astros organization and progressing to the AA level before retiring in 2000 to pursue coaching and finish his education. Continue reading

Fordham Set To Hire Manhattan’s Kevin Leighton

According to CBD sources, Manhattan’s Kevin Leighton will be named head coach at Fordham on Monday.  Leighton replaces Nick Restaino who left the program at the end of the 2011 season to pursue other opportunities.  Leighton has a career coaching record of 200-119-1 in six seasons at Manhattan including MAAC regular season titles in 2008, 2009 and 2011 along with MAAC tournament titles in 2006 and 2011. The JU baseball team found different ways to plate runs en route to a 5-4 victory against Manhattan at the Gainesville Regional of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

With the scored tied at one in the fifth inning, the Dolphins (37-23) used two sacrifice flies and a bases-loaded walk in the next two frames to set up the win. Sophomore Adam Brett Walker also drove in two runs on three hits to help total. Walker’s day helped him set the new single-season records for hits and total bases. Continue reading

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore Steven Ewing tossed six strong innings and freshman Corey Janson belted his first career home run on Friday, helping the 16th-ranked and No. 2 seed University of Miami Hurricanes defeat No. 3 seed Jacksonville University, 7-2, in the opening game of the Gainesville [Fla.] Regional at McKethan Stadium. 2011 MAAC Preseason Baseball Poll

Edison, N.J. – Rider University has been chosen as the favorite to win the 2011 MAAC Baseball Championship, according to a preseason poll voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Rider, the defending MAAC Champion, finished with 73 points in the poll, while Marist College finished second (67).  Canisius College placed third with 65 points.  Manhattan College placed fourth (56), followed by Siena College (51), Niagara University (28), Fairfield University (27), Saint Peter’s College (20), and Iona College (18). NCBWA Releases 2011 Stopper of the Year Watch List

Wichita, Kan. (NCBWA) — Forty-five players have been named to the initial watch list for the seventh annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Tuesday.

2011 CBD Season Preview: MAAC

The MAAC conference in 2010 was won by Canisius in the regular season with a 19-5 conference record. Marist came in second with a 16-8 record while Rider and Manhattan tied for third place with 15-7 records. Siena and Niagara tied for fifth place with 13-11 records. Fairfield finished in seventh with a 8-16 record while St. Peter’s finished in eighth with a 6-18 record and Iona finished last with a 3-21 conference mark.

Manhattan Baseball Spreads Holiday Cheer

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan College baseball team spread holiday cheer last week at St. Augustine’s School in the Bronx by participating in the annual “Breakfast with Santa” celebration for the second straight year.
