JMU Assistant Jay Sullenger Resigns for New Career

HARRISONBURG, Va., Dec. 22, 2011 – Baseball associate head coach Jay Sullenger, who has served on Spanky McFarland’s staff for 11 of his 14 seasons as head coach, announced that he will step away from the program in order to pursue new opportunities.

“There’s no doubt we’re going to miss him,” noted McFarland upon Sullenger’s departure. “He was a big factor in getting this program up to the level that it’s at right now. But I remember when he was a young coach coming in here and getting started. This will present an opportunity for somebody else to come in here and get started. We’ll obviously miss him, but at the same time we’re happy for him and his new endeavor. We wish him all the success and happiness.” Continue reading

JMU’S Lowery Receives 2011 Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award

WICHITA, Kan., June 30, 2011 – James Madison junior catcher Jake Lowery (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) was selected as the recipient of the 2011 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John’s Pizza on Thursday night at a banquet hosted by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.

The award is handed out annually to the top catcher in all of college baseball and is named in honor of former Major League All-Star, MVP, World Series champion and Hall of Famer Johnny Bench, who was on hand to present the award. Continue reading


2011 Brooks Wallace Award Watch List down to 10

As teams look toward Super Regional play, the list of players in the running for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award has been narrowed to 10.

CHAPEL HILL, NC — Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) allowed just two hits over eight innings, while Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) reached base five times as the University of Maine baseball team defeated Florida International University 4-1 in the Chapel Hill Regional off the NCAA baseball tournament on Saturday afternoon.
