2014 Big Ten Preseason Poll

BigTenLogoRosemont, Ill. – Indiana was the unanimous choice by the conference coaches as the preseason favorite to claim the Big Ten Championship, it was announced on Wednesday. The conference’s coaches voted on the top six teams and also selected three players from their own squads to a Players to Watch list. The Hoosiers were followed in the preseason poll by No. 2 Nebraska, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Michigan State, with Illinois and Michigan tied for fifth.

The Hoosiers return seven of their nine All-Big Ten honorees from last year’s College World Series squad, including third baseman Dustin DeMuth, catcher Kyle Schwarber and first baseman Sam Travis, who were named Big Ten Players to Watch. The trio each earned Preseason All-America accolades from various outlets, with Schwarber being a unanimous pick from Baseball America, College Baseball Newspaper and the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). 2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 7. Kyle Schwarber (Indiana)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 7 on the countdown is Indiana junior Kyle Schwarber. The Middletown, Ohio native attended Middletown High School where he was a four time team MVP. CBD Top 100 Countdown: 63. Sam Travis (Indiana)

Baseball, head shots, 09/12/12_Mike DickberndWe continue the countdown today with number 63, Indiana third baseman Sam Travis. In his sophomore campaign with the Hoosiers, Travis started all 65 games in a tough Big Ten schedule. During the 2013 season the 6’0” infielder batted an impressive .316 and ranked second in the Big Ten with 22 doubles, 57 RBI, 10 homeruns, 133 total bases and 39 walks. Travis earned a Second Team All-Big Ten selection and helped lead the Hoosiers to their first College World Series appearance in program history. Indiana releases 2014 Schedule

TracySmithIndiana_thumb.jpgBLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Baseball program released its 2014 schedule Thursday (Oct. 24), highlighted by 23 home games at Bart Kaufman Field.

2013 CWS: Oregon State 1 Indiana 0

MattBoydFeaturedOMAHA, Neb. – After taking a loss to Mississippi State earlier in the week, Oregon State’s Matt Boyd bounced back to shut out Indiana for the first time this season with a 1-0 win for the Beavers on Wednesday night at TD Ameritrade Park.

2013 CWS: Mississippi State 5 Indiana 4

MississippiStateTeamMeeting2OMAHA, Neb. – The crowd roared and the Mississippi State dugout exploded as Trey Porter’s eighth inning single plated the go-ahead run to give MSU a 5-4 win over Indiana on Monday night at TD Ameritrade Park.

2013 CWS: Indiana 2 Louisville 0

TracySmithIndiana.jpgOMAHA, Neb. – Indiana’s left-handed pitcher Joey DeNato led the Hoosiers to a 2-0 shutout victory Saturday night over the Louisville Cardinals in the opening round of the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park.

With the win, Indiana (49-18) advances in the winner’s bracket to face Mississippi State on Monday, June 17 at 7 p.m. CT while Louisville (51-13) falls into the loser’s bracket and will face No. 3 Oregon State earlier that day at 2 p.m. CT. Continue reading 2013 CWS: Indiana 2 Louisville 0

2013 College World Series Preview: Bracket One

CWS LogoMississippi State is coming off a super-regional victory over Virginia, wining 6-5 after an 18-hour rain delay. This is a heavily offense based team accumulating 30 hits over a two game span against Virginia. This will be the ninth appearance in the College World Series for the Bulldogs and first since 2007. A few notable players to keep an eye on include Wes Rea who is hitting .288 along with 37 RBIs and seven home runs, and Hunter Renfroe batting .360 with 61 RBIs and 15 homeruns, along with being drafted 13th overall in the MLB draft. Adam Frazier will also be one to keep an eye on with his .359 batting average and 38 RBIs. Mississippi State will face No.3 Oregon State in game one on Saturday with the winner advancing to take on the winner of Indiana vs. Louisville. They have shown that they can get a lead and hold on to it despite late comebacks. This may be a key factor for Mississippi State, if they can get out early then this team will be hard to beat.
