The Missouri Valley Conference enters its last weekend of non-conference play, with many teams looking to finalize their lineups and pitching rotations before their conference series begin next week. Creighton holds the best record in the MVC at 17-5, with Wichita State in second at 17-8, and the Redbirds of Illinois State tied with Bradley for third at 15-7. FORT WORTH, Texas – A Kyle Von Tungeln home run in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and helped propel the TCU Varsity baseball team to a 5-3 win over the Alumni squad Saturday afternoon. The game capped an outstanding weekend for the Horned Frog baseball team as they gear up for the opening of the 2011 campaign on Friday, Feb. 18 against Kansas. DENVER – Fresno State has been selected as the favorite to win the 2011 Western Athletic Conference regular season baseball crown in a vote by the league’s seven head coaches. The coaches also voted on a preseason all-WAC team with Fresno State leading the way as it placed seven players on the team. Hawai‘i junior second baseman Kolten Wong was named the preseason player of the year, while San Jose State senior Blake McFarland was picked the preseason pitcher of the year. Wichita, Kan. (NCBWA) — Forty-five players have been named to the initial watch list for the seventh annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Tuesday.

The 2010 season saw the WAC Conference regular season title won by the Fresno State Bulldogs with a 16-8 conference mark which was 1.5 games better then second place teams Nevada and New Mexico State who each had 14-9 conference records. Hawaii came in fourth place with a .500 record of 12-12 while Louisiana Tech finished in fifth at 11-13. The NCAA released their 2010 NCAA Baseball Attendance Figures which is led by four SEC schools. The LSU Tigers lead the pack with an average of 10,673 fans in 37 games. Arkansas comes in second with 7,704 fans while Ole Miss comes in third with 6,759 fans edging out fourth place South Carolina by an average of one fan. College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2011 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with number 26 Hawaii junior second baseman Kolten Wong. The Hilo, Hawaii, native attended Kamehameha-Hawaii High School in Kea’au, and was an All-League selection each of his four years there. He was named to the All-State Team in 2006 and 2008, and was State Co-Player of the Year in 2008, hitting .660 for his senior season. Wong also played football in high school and was named First Team All-League from 2005-07, earning league Player of the Year honors in 2006. TUCSON, Ariz. — Texas Christian University is ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s NCAA Division I pre-season baseball poll.
The Horned Frogs finished third at the College World Series last season and return a deep and experienced ball club for 2011. Seven position player starters are back along with three Louisville Slugger Pre-Season All-American starting pitchers in LHP Matt Purke (16-0, 3.02 ERA, 142 K, 34 BB), RHP Kyle Winkler (12-3, 3.39 ERA, 92 K, 36 BB), and RHP Steven Maxwell (11-2, 2.70 ERA, 93 K, 34 BB). The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is reporting that the Hawaii Warriors will likely join the Big West Conference in all sports except football where they will join the Mountain West Conference. This move is extremely interesting as the Warriors have been one of the stronger programs in the WAC conference in the last five years making multiple runs into the NCAA Tournament.
