USA Baseball announces Golden Spikes Award Finalists

DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball announced Tuesday the names of the five finalists for the 2010 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award (GSA).  This year will mark the 33rd consecutive year that the Golden Spikes Award will be presented to the nation’s premier amateur baseball player.

Chris Duffy, IF/OF, Central Florida; Yasmani Grandal, C, Miami (Fla.); Bryce Harper, C/IF/OF, Southern Nevada; Drew Pomeranz, LHP, Mississippi; and Chris Sale, LHP, Florida Gulf Coast round out the five finalists.

USA Baseball Announces 2010 Golden Spikes Award Semifinalists

GoldenSpikesAward (DURHAM, N.C.) – USA Baseball announced Tuesday the names of the 30 semifinalists for the 2010 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award (GSA).  This year will mark the 33rd consecutive year that the award has been presented to the nation’s top amateur baseball player. 

Today also marks the third year in a row that GoldenSpikesAward.com – powered by MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM), the interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball – will be the online home for the award.  The Web site features content devoted exclusively to the GSA, including news, voting history, past-winner photo galleries, and photographs and video highlights for the 2010 semifinalists.  Fans can follow online at GoldenSpikesAward.com as the list of 30 players is narrowed to five finalists on Tuesday, June 8, en route to the announcement of this year’s winner on Tuesday, July 13.

Should Bryce Harper Win the Golden Spikes Award?

My first response to him was that there was no way that a junior college player would win the Golden Spikes award. Come to find out, Alex Fernandez picked up the Golden Spikes award in 1990 out of Miami-Dade Community College.

2010 Golden Spikes Award Watch List

USABaseballLogo (DURHAM, N.C.) – USA Baseball announced its preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List Thursday, marking the organization’s first step toward identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country.  Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2010 for the 33rd time.

The watch list features 50 of the nation’s top amateur talents, and it will be a “rolling” list to ensure that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the Golden Spikes Award, to be presented live on Tuesday, July 13, at the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest in Anaheim, Calif.

Golden Spikes is better than the Heisman?

GoldenSpikesThe Wall Street Journal has an interesting article about the success rate of players who win the Golden Spikes Award being more successful than players that win the Heisman Trophy Award. I think the reason behind this is that the best players in College Football do not fit the “system” at the next level being the NFL. In baseball, it is much different in that the best player in college is likely going to be able to hit/pitch in the MLB because the talent transfers over easier to the pro game.
