St. John’s and Georgetown set to break Records

St. John’s and Georgetown will get together over this weekend for a three game Big East series. The first two games of the series will be played in Washington DC at Shirley Povich Field while the game on Sunday will take place at new Citi Field in Flushing New York. The game will break the NCAA record for single game attendance as all 42,000 seats sold out in less then 45 minutes during the public offering. The previous record is 40,106 who saw the opening of Petco Park in San Diego when the San Diego State Aztecs played the Houston Cougars. Continue reading

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team used four home runs to defeat the Pittsburgh Panthers 9-5 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Trees Field. The win upped UC’s record to 10-8 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST, while Pittsburgh fell to 11-6 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST. Continue reading

Here is your Big East Recap for March 21st.

Pittsburgh 5 Cincinnati 0

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team extended its winning streak to six games with a 5-0 shutout over Big East rival Cincinnati here today at Trees Field. Corey Baker pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering six hits while striking out five for his team-leading third win of the year.

The Panther offense was led by Frank Mercurio, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI including his third home run of the season, a solo shot that started the sixth for Pitt. Continue reading

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team opened up Big East Conference play with an 18-4 win over the University of Cincinnati Bearcats here today at Trees Field. Every Panther in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit while eight different Panthers drove in at least one RBI on the day. Continue reading

I will occasionally check in with some great newspaper articles from around the country. The first article today is from The Republican about Amherst College baseball coach Bill Thurston who currently has 795 wins who is entering his 44th and final season in charge of the program. The next article comes from The Hoya which is a student newspaper for Georgetown who recaps the weekend action for the Hoyas. The final article today comes from The Huntsville Item who stops in and talks with BYU pitcher Jeremy Toole who is transitioning from a junior college to Division 1 baseball. Continue reading

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Due to the recent unavailability of Progress Energy Park, the schedule for the inaugural BIG EAST-Big Ten Baseball Challenge has been adjusted to include games at McKechnie Field in Bradenton and Red McEwen Field at the University of South Florida. The BIG EAST-Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, begins on Friday, Feb. 20.

Big East/Big Ten Challenge Home and Away teams Announcement

PETERSBURG, FL – The home and away team designations for the inaugural BIG EAST-Big TEN Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, have been determined by the participating conference offices, it was announced today. Schedule for First Big East/Big Ten Baseball Challenge Released

PETERSBURG, FL – The schedule for the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, has been released, API Management and Marketing announced today. Twenty-seven games will be held February 20-22, 2009, at venues in St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Dunedin, FL, highlighted by Friday and Saturday evening doubleheaders at Knology Park and Bright House Field.
