Furman releases 2012 Schedule

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Five games at Fluor Field, including a clash against two-time reigning national champion South Carolina, highlight Furman’s 2012 baseball schedule, which was released today by Paladin head coach Ron Smith.

Furman will play the Gamecocks on Mar. 20 at Fluor Field as part of a 32-game home schedule that also features contests with Michigan State (Feb. 24), Miami of Ohio (Feb. 25), Maine (Feb. 26), and Clemson (Apr. 10) at the beautiful downtown facility, which serves as the home of the Single A South Atlantic League Greenville Drive. 2011 Southern Conference Preseason Poll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference baseball coaches and media have each selected College of Charleston as the preseason favorite to win the league championship in 2011.

The Cougars received all 10 possible first-place votes and 100 points in the coaches’ balloting, as coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams. CofC also grabbed 19 of 22 first-place votes and 239 points in the media poll. Coach Monte Lee’s team returns six of nine starters in the field as well as a pair of weekend starting pitchers from the 2010 team that was 44-19 overall and finished second in the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional. 2011 CBD Season Preview: Southern Conference

The 2010 season was a historic season for the Southern Conference.   After getting 2 teams in Regionals in 5 of 6 previous years, along with the SOCON tourney champion and regular season champion(The Citadel) 2 teams, College of Charleston and Elon earned an at-large bid putting 3 SOCON teams in NCAA postseason for the first time in history of the league. In 2010 the SOCON finished the season with 7 teams with RPI in the top 75. Freshman Austin Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs to lead No. 4 Florida (38-12) to a 9-3 victory over UNF (29-23) on Tuesday night in front of 3,314 fans at McKethan Stadium. In addition, the rookie belted his team-leading 17th homer, a two-run shot in the fifth, to establish a Gator freshman single-season record. UF extended its winning streak to five games and has captured 12 of its last 13 outings.  

“We got a really good start from Tommy Toledo and North Florida has always played us tough,” head coach Kevin O’Sullivan. “They’re scrappy and they’re well coached by Dusty Rhodes. It was good to get on the board early and get a 5-0 lead. I thought it gave us a little cushion and it was great to get a lot of players in there tonight. Overall, it was a great team effort and a positive way to end the regular season here at home.”
