Time is running out for men’s college baseball at University of Wisconsin La Crosse. Due to budget cuts the administration as of June 10th has decided to end their division three baseball program immediately unless $50,000 can be raised by September 1st. The first hurdle will allow play for the upcoming season; however an additional $375,000 will need to be raised by May 2010 to keep baseball at the school over the next 5 years. La Crosse has developed a long list of notable athletes over the years, to name a few: Brewers pitcher Jerry Augustine, Brewers/Huntsville Stars/Team Italy’s catcher Vinny Rottino, first baseman Craig Kusick, NFL lineman Tom Newberry and NFL WR Bill Schroeder. KENOSHA, Wis. – The NCAA Division III members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association have selected Pomona-Pitzer College first baseman Drew Hedman (Sr., Redding, Calif./Shasta) as the NCBWA NCAA Division III Hitter of the Year, while Trinity College’s Jeremiah Bayer (Sr., Greenfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) was named NCBWA NCAA Division III Pitcher of the Year. Hedman was a unanimous pick of the eight-member sports information director’s panel, while Bayer received seven-of-eight first-place votes. Continue reading
The College Baseball Blog writer Nate Owen was again in attendance during the second day of the NCAA Division 3 New England Regional hosted by Eastern Connecticut State. The first game of the day featured Eastern Connecticut getting an elimination game victory over 13-2 victory over Suffolk. The second elimination game that followed was between Husson University and Westfield State College. Husson would walk away with a 10-3 victory over Westfield State which ended their season. The third game of the day featured a winner’s bracket matchup between WPI and Babson. WPI was able to win the game by a score of 15-5 as they upped their record in the regional to 2-0. The final game of the night between Trinity (CT) and Southern Maine was postponed to Friday morning at 10 am. Continue reading
MANSFIELD Conn.- Dark clouds moved in as the sky started to open up in the middle of WPI and Babson’s second day NCAA regional game.
Unfortunately for eighth seeded Babson that wasn’t the only thing to open up as WPI’s offense exploded for a combined eleven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pad their lead and coast to a 15-5 win. Continue reading
MANSFIELD Conn.- A sloppy seventh inning proved to to be the difference in the second game of Division III NCAA Regional action between Westfield State and Husson.
The Eagles scored six runs in the inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into an 8-3 advantage en route to a 10-3 victory.
“Today we came out and we battled,” Husson head coach Jason Harvey said. “We didn’t come up with some key hits until late in the game but [pitcher] Nate [Adams] kept us in the game and we capitalized on some of their errors.” Continue reading

AUSTIN, Texas—Concordia University Texas today announced that Tommy Boggs, former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher with the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves, has been named as the University’s new head baseball coach.

MANSFIELD Conn.- The first three innings of the opening game of day two of the Division III New England Regional saw fifth seeded Suffolk match top seeded Eastern Connecticut run for run and the teams were tied 2-2 entering the fourth.
The Warriors pushed across two in top of the fourth to go ahead 4-2 and the Rams were poised to respond in turn during the bottom of the inning.

The College Baseball Blog was in attendance on May 13th for the first day of action in the 2009 Division 3 New England Regional in Mansfield Connecticut. The first game of the day featured WPI taking on Suffolk College which was won by WPI by a score of 7-6. The game was WPI’s first in the NCAA Tournament in the 106 year history of their program. The second game of the day featured Babson taking on the host school of Eastern Connecticut State. Babson used a big seven run second inning to grab a 9-0 lead and hold on for a 10-6 victory. The third game of the day saw Trinity (CT) take on Westfield State. The Bantams were able to get a James Wood homer which gave them the lead for good as they picked up the 6-4 victory. The final game of the night saw Southern Maine take on Husson. Southern Maine was able to pick up a 5-4 ten inning victory on a Mike Eaton single to right field. Continue reading
MANSFIELD Conn.- Powerful Southern Maine and sophomore Mike Eaton took a while to wake out of their slumber, but when they did, the Huskies walked off winners in the opening round on the New England Regional.
After going hitless early on and making a key error in the field, Eaton lined a one out single in the bottom of the tenth to send Southern Maine to a 5-4 win against the Husson Eagles. Continue reading
MANSFIELD CONN.- While the first NCAA regional game between WPI and Suffolk went down to the wire, the second game of the day between Babson and Eastern Connecticut was decided early thanks to a barrage of hits by the Beavers and a 158 pitch, ten strikeout complete game by sophomore Andrew Aizenhadt.
Eighth seeded Babson took a 2-0 lead in the first but blew the game open in the second with seven runs against the top seeded Warriors and held on for a 10-6 win. Continue reading
