2009 MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll and Teams

Edison, N.J. – Canisius College is the team to beat in the 2009 MAAC baseball season, according to a preseason poll voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Canisius finished with 81 points in the poll, while Rider University finished second (66). Manhattan College placed third with 58 points. Marist College and Siena College tied for fourth place (53), followed by Fairfield University (30), Niagara University (29), Saint Peter’s College (19), and Iona College (12). Continue reading

Canisius releases 2009 Schedule

The Canisius College baseball team will take on Virginia, West Virginia and Charlotte in its 2009 schedule that features 17 home games, including the Big Four Baseball Classic at the Demske Sports Complex.

Canisius opens with a four-game series at Gardner-Webb Feb. 20-22. The Golden Griffins will take on Charlotte in a three-game series Feb. 27-March 1. The 49ers have won 40 games each of the last two seasons and have the fourth-highest winning percentage in the country since 2006. Continue reading

2008 All-Canadian College Team: Mike Gosse of Oklahoma leads the way

DH Mike Gosse sure stood tall for in his Oklahoma Sooners uniform.

As former Montreal Expos manager Felipe Alou used to describe super sub F.P. Santangelo: “It’s not the size of the man, it’s the size of the heart inside the man.”

Gosse has a 6-foot-6 heart.

Gosse (senior, Pitt Meadows, BC) earned 35 first-place ballots to lead the way the ninth annual All-Canadian College Team. He had seven more than First Team votes than 2B Kevin Mailloux (junior, Windsor, Ont.) of the Canisius Golden Griffins.

Results from our usual voting panel of 42 were scored on a 5-3-1 points basis, Our numbers were totaled by a bonded accounting firm of Grant Thornton.

Our 42 experts came from a vast cross section from both sides of the border: coaches (14), executives (eight), scouts (eight), scouting directors (three), former players (three), writers (three), broadcaster (one) and our crack staff. Continue reading

NYIT, Lafayette, and Canisus pick up wins

Old Westbury, NY * Junior Mark Stuckless drove in a run for the second consecutive game, but NYIT took advantage of five Hofstra errors and a strong pitching performance from Mike LaLuna to win Wednesday afternoon’s non-conference contest, 7-2. With the victory, NYIT improves to 13-23-1 while the Pride fall to 17-31. Continue reading

Entering the week having scored 29 runs in its previous six games, the Canisius College baseball team has scored 33 runs in the last two games as the Golden Griffins defeated Delaware State 21-12 at Soldier Field in Dover, Del. on Tuesday. Canisius picks up win over Penn State

Down 6-4 heading into the eighth, the Canisius College baseball team scored seven unanswered runs in the final two innings to defeat Penn State 11-6 in University Park, Pa. on Monday.

Senior Ryan Asis and junior Kevin Mailloux each had three hits for Canisius (14-2). Asis and junior Kevin Mahoney each scored three runs for the Griffs while Mahoney led the team with three RBIs as Asis and senior Adam Donato each drove in two. Continue reading

Canisius picked to win MAAC

EDISON, N.J. – Canisius College is the top choice to win it all during the 2008 MAAC baseball season, according to a preseason poll voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Canisius finished with 71 points in the poll, four points ahead of second-place Manhattan College (67). Marist College placed third with 66 points. Fairfield University and Siena College tied for fourth place (50), followed by Rider University (36), Saint Peter’s College (34), Iona College (19), and Niagara University (12). Continue reading
