BERKELEY, CALIF.Sophomore right fielder/pitcher Blake Smith hit a clutch grand slam in the sixth inning and junior closer Matt Gorgen notched his fifth save of the season as the No. 7-ranked California baseball team edged Fresno State, 5-4, Wednesday at Evans Diamond. Cal seals Series Victory over LBSU

dannyespinosalbsu.jpeg(Berkeley, CA) The #11 Cal Golden Bears (17-5-1) added another W as they gave the #4 Long Beach State Dirtbags (17-6) their first series loss of the season by a final score of 10-6. The Golden Bears took advantage of their home field advantage and abused the Dirtbags’ pitcher Vance Worley (3-1). Worley allowed a solo home run to Dylan Tonneson in the sixth, as Cal continued to bring the heat with another two runs in the seventh. Worley gave up nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits over six plus innings. Continue reading

Ross Outduels Liebel in Opener – Long Beach St. v. Cal

LONG BEACH– Tyson Ross (4-0) out dueled Andrew Liebel (2-1) as No. 11-ranked California (16-5-1) won the opener of the three-game series with No. 4-ranked Long Beach State (17-5), 6-1. It was the first time an opponent has won an opening game of a three-game series against the Dirtbags this season.

Ross gave up five hits and struck out six over eight shutout innings. Ross produced 14 groundballs, including two double plays that ended LBSU threats in the middle innings. Ross began the game with three perfect innings and retired another seven in a row. Continue reading

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) allowed just a bunt single in the first inning while striking out nine in the Coastal Carolina University baseball team’s (8-1) 6-0 win over George Mason (1-6) March 2 in the final game of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament at BB&T Coastal Field.

McCully allowed just one walk and tied his career high in strikeouts while improving his record to 2-0 on the year. Continue reading

BIG 12 Recap from Friday 2/22

I will be providing the recaps of the games from the BIG 12 this season along with the press releases from those Schools.

No. 15 Bears Ware Out Purdue 2-1 Landis Ware’s two-run home run provided the offense, and Kendal Volz struck out 10 as No. 15 Baylor defeated Purdue 2-1 in Friday night’s 2008 season opener at Baylor Ballpark. This was the first-ever meeting between the Bears (1-0) and the Boilermakers (0-1) in baseball. It came in the Bears’ 300th game at Baylor Ballpark.

Ware, who earned the start at second base only because 2007 Freshman All-American Raynor Campbell is out with an injury, made good use of the opportunity, going 2-for-3 on the night. He doubled down the right-field line in his first at bat to lead off the third inning, but it was his seventh-inning at bat that decided the game. Paul Miles drew a two-out walk and stole second. On the next pitch, Ware turned on an inside fastball for the game-deciding home run.
