2013 West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll

WestCoastConference_thumb.jpgSAN BRUNO, Calif. – The University of San Diego has been selected to win the 2013 West Coast Conference baseball championship, in a preseason poll of the WCC’s nine head coaches. The Toreros earned six of eight possible first-place votes and 62 overall points in the poll. Last year’s West Coast Conference champion, Pepperdine University, earned 53 points and picked up two first place votes in the annual survey.  Continue reading

BYU names Mike Littlewood as Head Coach

BYUPROVO, Utah — BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe today announced the hiring of Mike Littlewood as the new head baseball coach of the Cougars.

Littlewood comes to BYU from Dixie State College in St. George, Utah, where he has been the head baseball coach since 1996. In 16 seasons, Littlewood compiled the most wins in Dixie State history (563-238; .702), while capturing eight league titles. His teams made four appearances in the National Junior College World Series, winning the national championship in 2004 and finishing runner-up in 2001. Littlewood was named National JUCO Coach of the Year in 2004. Continue reading

Cooper, Rodriguez Talk About Pepperdine’s Big Conference Sweep of BYU

Vince Gonzalez had two stand-up triples.MALIBU, Calif. — Tony Cooper couldn’t quite replicate his Friday afternoon four-hit, four-RBI performance, but Pepperdine was plenty happy with the outfielder’s three RBI on Saturday in an 8-7 win against BYU at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

Cooper only had one hit, but he provided it when it mattered most. With two outs in the sixth inning, Pepperdine had a pair of runners in scoring position and had just tied the ball game. Cooper lined a 1-1 fastball into centerfield to score both runners and put the Waves ahead for good.

Jordan Fox slides in with the go-ahead run.MALIBU, Calif. — For the second day in a row, the Pepperdine offense rallied from behind to take down the BYU Cougars. On Saturday, the Waves (28-19, 12-6) trailed 5-2 and 6-4, but a four-run sixth inning propelled them to an 8-7 victory at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The win gave Pepperdine a crucial West Coast Conference sweep that moved the Waves into a tie for first place after league-leading San Diego dropped its second straight game to Loyola Marymount.

In the paramount sixth inning, redshirt freshman Bryan Langlois led off with an infield single, reaching on a chopper to third base. Both James Grandpre and Matt Gelalich walked, despite both beginning their at bats trying to sacrifice bunt. Zach Vincej flared a single into centerfield to score a run and Joe Sever tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Irvine lit up BYU's Adam Miller.IRVINE, Calif. — The UC Irvine bats had an awakening Saturday afternoon, knocking 14 hits in a 9-2 win over BYU at Anteater Ballpark’s Cicerone Field.

BYU starter Adam Miller struggled with his command. He pitched only two innings, allowing three runs on two hits and four walks and a hit batsman.

With plenty of offensive support, starting pitcher Crosby Slaught cruised through six innings, allowing only two hits as the Anteaters got their first series win of the season.

Mike Gillespie comes out to argue a call.IRVINE, Calif. — Crosby Slaught pitched six strong innings and the offense erupted for 14 hits as UC Irvine took the series against BYU with a 9-2 win Saturday afternoon at Cicerone Field.

Slaught was removed in the seventh inning with an 8-0 lead after allowing only two hits and one walk in the game. The offense staked him to that lead with contributions throughout the lineup. Continue reading

Gillespie Reacts Following UC Irvine’s 3-1 Series Opener

Mike Gillespie comes out to argue a call.IRVINE, Calif. — UC Irvine made three first inning runs hold up Thursday night at Anteater Ballpark to take a 3-1 win over Brigham Young in the series opener.

The Anteaters only managed four hits, but it was enough for junior right-hander Kyle Hooper. He improved to 3-0, pitching six innings and allowing only one run while striking out seven BYU batters.

Kyle Hooper throws a changeup.IRVINE, Calif. — After 21 scoreless innings to begin the season, UC Irvine’s Kyle Hooper finally gave up a run. In the fifth inning, Brigham Young was able to put together a pair of singles and a groundout to end Hooper’s scoreless stretch, but that was all the Cougars would get on the night.

Despite only having four hits, Irvine (7-5) took the opener of the three-game set 3-1 Thursday night at Anteater Ballpark.

CBD Column: SoCal Wk 4 Weekend Preview

Two of the nation’s top matchups this weekend will feature Southern California teams on the road. No. 16 UCLA has its first road test as they travel to No. 9 Georgia and No. 19 Cal State Fullerton tries to bounce back from a Tuesday loss to USC with a strong series at No. 6 Texas A&M.

Two other schools, San Diego and Loyola Marymount head on the road to play a pair of traditional powers that have struggled early this season.
