Albany, N.Y. – University at Albany head baseball coach Jon Mueller announced the program’s 2012 schedule on Friday, January 13, 2012. The Great Danes, who advanced to the America East Conference championship game last season, will play three-game series’ with pre-season #14 Miami and Coastal Carolina on the road, and will host nine opponents at Varsity Field. Stony Brook Seeks To Repeat In America East Tournament

Boasting a program best 41 wins this season, Stony Brook will look to defend their America East Baseball Championship as play in the conference tournament begins late Wednesday morning.

The tournament will open with match ups that look quite familiar to the teams involved, as they are all rematches of last weekends season ending series. Regular season champion Stony Brook (41-10 overall, 22-2 America East) will face fourth seeded Albany (19-29, 11-11) at 3pm. The Seawolves swept the Great Danes in their four game series this past weekend, amassing 29 runs and holding Albany to a mere eight. America East Pitcher of the Year Nick Tropeano carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning in the series’ first game, and has a program record 11 wins this season. 2011 America East Preseason Coaches Poll

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— The Stony Brook Seawolves are the unanimous picks to win the 2011 America East Baseball Championship according to the preseason coaches’ poll and as voted on by all six of the league’s head coaches. After winning their second tournament title in three years in 2010, the Seawolves received all five possible first-place votes as head coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams. Albany releases 2011 Schedule

Albany, N.Y. – Trips to California and North Carolina highlight the 2011 University at Albany baseball schedule, as announced on Monday, Dec. 13 by Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy. America East Tournament: Cantwell leads Stony Brook to America East Title

Stony Brook wins its 2nd championship in 3 years. (Photo: America East)In an unpredictable America East baseball tournament, Stony Brook took the America East championship after beating Albany Friday afternoon, 4-2. This game marked only the third time in America East baseball history that neither one of the top two seeds were involved in the title game; heading into the tournament, the Seawolves had been ranked third, the Great Danes fourth.

The Seawolves, seeded third going into the tournament, were led by the performance of outfielder Pat Cantwell. The sophomore hit the winning two-run homer with only one out in the seventh inning. Continue reading America East Tournament: Cantwell leads Stony Brook to America East Title

2010 Preseason America East Poll

AmericaEastPoll CAMBRIDGE, Mass.— University of Maine is the favorite of the head coaches to capture the 2010 America East Baseball Championship in what would be the Black Bears’ first conference title since 2006. Maine, which finished fifth in 2009, garnered three of a possible five first-place votes and 23 total points. Head coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams.

Stony Brook University, the 2008 America East Champion, was selected second with two first-place votes and 21 points, and Binghamton University, last year’s regular-season and tournament champion, finished third with the final first-place vote and 19 points. University at Albany (13 points), University of Hartford (9) and UMBC (5) rounded out the six-team poll.

Albany releases 2010 Schedule

AlbanyBaseball Albany, N.Y. – Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced the 2010 University at Albany baseball schedule on Tuesday afternoon. The Great Danes, who returned to the America East Conference Championship last season after winning the league title in 2007, will compete in a tournament at Coastal Carolina and make a six-game trip to California to highlight the non-conference schedule. UAlbany will also play an America East Conference schedule against five league opponents.

Albany Baseball Team Supports ALS and Breast Cancer Research

AlbanyBaseball Albany, N.Y. – The UAlbany baseball team supported ALS and Breast Cancer Research organizations by participating in two local walks held in the Capital Region last weekend.

The Great Danes gathered at Saratoga State Park for the 8th Annual Walk to Strike Out ALS, which raises funds and awareness for  the ALS Regional Center at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a progressive, fatal, neuromuscular disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons. About 7,000 people in the United States are diagnosed each year and 30,000 Americans live with the disease at any given time. Most are given a prognosis of two to five years to live.

America East Players of the Week

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.– In a rain-shortened weekend for many teams, the University at Albany baseball team was busy completing a four-game sweep of America East foe Maine with help from Player of the Week Gary Pitcheralle (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) and Rookie of the Week Zach Kraham (Ghent, N.Y./Chatham), as named today. The sweep soared Albany from a third-place tie to sole possession of second place in the standings. Binghamton hurler Jeff Dennis (North Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) kept his team in first place with a dominant performance on the mound down in Baltimore, earning Pitcher of the Week honors. CAMBRIDGE, Mass.– America East baseball conference play got underway last weekend between the raindrops, and a trio of players earned league honors to start off the second part of the season. Vermont sophomore shortstop Matt Duffy (Milton, Mass./St. Sebastian’s) proved valuable at the plate to earn Player of the Week recognition. Binghamton lefty pitcher James Giulietti (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-JFK), another sophomore, received Pitcher of the Week honors, and Albany freshman first baseman Mike Tirri (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) was named Rookie of the Week.
