Team USA defeats Morehead City 6-1

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Carlos Rodon (NC State) struck out seven in four innings and combined with four other pitchers on a three-hitter as the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team beat the Morehead City Marlins, 6-1, with 2,117 fans on hand at Puck O’Neill Field at Big Rock Stadium on a picture-perfect Wednesday evening. USA Collegiate Team defeats Wilmington Sharks 7-4

FROM USA BASEBALL RELEASEWILMINGTON, N.C. — Kris Bryant (San Diego) hit a two-run home run in the first inning and five pitchers combined to strike out 12 as the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team cruised to a 7-4 win over the Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League in front of 2,733 on Tuesday night at Buck Hardee Field. Top 100 Countdown: 1. Mark Appel (Stanford)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We conclude the countdown today at number 1 with Stanford RHP Mark Appel. The San Ramon, California native attended Monte Vista High School. He was a two year letterwinner where as a senior he appeared in nine games with an ERA of 0.90 ERA in 31.0 innings. He gave up just 21 hits, striking out 45 and walking just six over five starts while going 4-0 with three saves. He was picked in the 15th round by the Detroit Tigers but decided to head to Stanford. Top 100 Countdown: 6. Marcus Stroman (Duke)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 6 with Duke junior RHP Marcus Stroman. The Medford, New York native attended Patchogue-Medford High School where he was a four year letter winner. He went 9-1 as a senior with a 0.25 ERA and 120 strikeouts while hitting .350 with six homers and 22 stolen bases. His junior season saw him go 7-2 on the mound with a 1.20 ERA and 96 strikeouts while batting .410 with a pair of homers and 30 steals. He was named Louisville Slugger’s Player of the Year and earning the Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the state of New York. He also won the Paul Gibson Award, which goes to the top pitcher on Long Island. He was selected in the 18th round (532nd overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals but decided to head to Duke. Continue reading

The Jacksonville, Arkansas native attended Sylvan Hills High School where he went 25-1 as a junior and senior while being named State of Arkansas Gatorade Player fo the Year, Arkansas Player of the Year by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Louisville Slugger and MaxPreps following senior season. We continue the countdown today at number 26 with Texas A&M junior RHP Michael Wacha.The Texarkana, Texas native attended Pleasant Grove High School where he was a two-time All-State selection. As a senior,  he went 6-3 while leading the squad to a state semifinal appearance while going 16-3 as a junior bringing the squad to the State Championship Game.  Continue reading

Oregon’s George Horton added to 2012 USA Collegiate National Team Coaching Staff

DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball has announced that Oregon baseball coach George Horton has been named to the 2012 Collegiate National Team coaching staff. The Ducks skipper will serve as an assistant coach under manager — and new Tennessee Volunteers head coach — Dave Serrano.

“We have long admired George’s work at Cal State Fullerton and Oregon, and we are excited to name him to a Collegiate National Team coaching staff,” said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball’s general manager of National Teams. “George’s energy and leadership will be a welcome addition to Dave Serrano’s staff.” Continue reading
