The final Stater code is, “Once a Coug, always a Coug.” And it is the code that the fellow seniors and myself are going to have to live by from now on. Like we knew it would, the day came when the seven of us would have to hand in our jerseys and put a wrap on our college careers, which is still a tough pill to swallow. Read the rest of this entry »

We will take this weeks’ Stater code strait from the Ten Commandments (but don’t worry not religiosity in this post). Respect thy Mother and Father. In lieu of moms weekend having just past, I think it is a good idea to mention the true respect that we all have for our superiors, which extends beyond our parents.

This weeks’ Stater code is consistency. In the game of failure a consistent mental state is the only thing that one can be sure will show up to the yard everyday. This weeks’ Stater code is trust the plan. Sounds simple enough but when the going gets tough, the plan can seem as distant as that retirement account you have been planning on opening. The Stater code from the first week of the season is “constant progression.” If you speak Japanese, or are a Toyota Motors enthusiast, you will recognize this as the term kaizen.
Our coaching staff rallies around the analogy of getting one percent better every day. If we can do that, soon enough we will be miles ahead of where we started. Read the rest of this entry »

We will chalk up our Stater code of the month to a Chinese proverb: “The journey is the reward.” Though January does mark the start of baseball season, I will not say that it has marked the start of our journey. For this team, that started in August. Read the rest of this entry »

December’s Stater code is preparation.
It seems simple enough, but preparing for a season is serious business. Every team wants to be the most prepared, making the nature of getting ready for the season a competition in itself. Read the rest of this entry »

There are many Stater codes that we try to adhere to, some more spelled out than others. Things like being on time, attending every class, and participating in community service events are all front-line things that can be punishable offences if they are neglected.
But the Stater code that is at work when all of these things are being done is the code of loving your team. No matter what the task at hand may be, its participation and completion boils down to brotherly love. Read the rest of this entry »
