LONG BEACH, Calif. — Long Beach State head coach Troy Buckley planned to pitch by committee on Tuesday, but had no idea he would need to go to his first reliever 11 pitches into the game or that he wouldn’t make another mound visit all night.
Senior reliever Nick Rossetta entered the game and completely shut down a high-powered San Diego offense for nine innings to lead Long Beach to a 6-1 victory at Blair Field.

Two-way players are becoming more and more rare in the college baseball game, but their value has never been higher with the 11.7 scholarship limit. In Southern California, there have been a number of two-way studs, including Michael Lorenzen last year with Cal State Fullerton.
This year, Pepperdine’s Aaron Brown and San Diego’s Louie Lechich have been dynamic Sunday starters when they aren’t roaming the plains in centerfield and hitting bombs in the middle of their respective teams’ lineups. But who would come out on top when the two duo players faced off with each other? See who helped their squad win the big series rubber match in Malibu.
That plus rubber matches at San Diego State, Cal Poly, USC and Cal State Fullerton. Find out how things shook out on Sunday in Southern California. This Sunday Mother’s Day edition of the roundup includes video of a Gatorade/water bucket shower during an interview and a photo gallery from Santa Barbara. Nino Giarratano was named the head coach at San Francisco 16 years ago or shortly after Nico Giarratano left short pants behind.
For years, Nino heard about Nico’s prowess on the baseball field through text messages from Brenda Giarratano and phone calls, his coaching duties preventing him from seeing his son develop as a competitor and ballplayer. The only two Southern California teams that seem secure in the postseason matched up for the second week in a row with No. 27 Pepperdine traveling to No. 7 Cal Poly this time. A familiar middle-of-the-lineup face who had been struggling seems to be back in the groove as he led his team to a victory.
It only took one swing in the UCLA/Fullerton game and Michael Cederoth had an unusual outing as he tried to lead San Diego State to a win at Long Beach State. Cederoth also tried to trim the national saves lead on Sam Moore, but Moore got into Irvine’s game at San Diego even though the ‘Eaters jumped out to a 13-2 lead.

Bradley Zimmer isn’t out to blaze any new trails, just to find some consistency.
It’s been a challenge for the University of San Francisco junior. He’s the highest profile player on a team battling to find its way in the West Coast Conference.
A 2013 WCC all-star, Zimmer is one of the top draft-eligible juniors in the country, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound center fielder who can hit and run. He turned a sure single into a standup triple in a recent game with Portland. That led to a big ninth inning as the Dons (20-22, 8-13) salvaged a win over the Pilots.
Batting lead off, Zimmer went 3-for-4 in that victory, the second half of a doubleheader. Hitting third in the first game, he was 1-for-4. Continue reading WCC profile: Zimmer adjusting to changing roles, expectations
With UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine and Cal State Northridge not having lights at their fields, it opens up the possibility of being able to catch multiple games in one day when those teams play at home and then other Southern California squads host night games.
But not having lights also opens up the possibility of games being suspended, postponed or even called due to darkness. That was the case on Tuesday when UCLA visited Santa Barbara and ended up going into extra innings where the game came to a completely unsatisfactory conclusion after 12 innings.
