Top 100 Countdown: Number 61 Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia)

JeddGyrkoHeadShot The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 61 in our countdown with West Virginia junior shortstop Jedd Gyorko. He is a 5-10 185 pound shortstop from Morgantown West Virginia where he played at University High School. He was a four-time all-conference and three-time all-state player while being the 2007 Conference Hitter of the Year.

Monroe (LA) builds new field

MonroeLAGroundBreaking The city of Monroe LA is building a new baseball field for the Monroe School District which College Baseball HOF inductee Wilbert Ellis showing his support for the field. He believes that this project should increase the African-American participation numbers which are clearly down at all levels of baseball especially college. It is coming to be a rare site to see an African-American playing baseball as we continue to see the increase in showcases and other forms of elite amateur baseball play.

Stephen Strasburg Selected as 23rd Dick Howser Trophy Recipient

stephenstrasburgLUBBOCK, Texas—San Diego State’s dominant right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg is the recipient of the 23rd annual Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball’s player of the year. The presentation was made Thursday for the first time In Lubbock, Texas as part of the festivities to recognize and induct the College Baseball Hall of Fame and the awarding of several other national honors for 2009. Former Maine coach John Winkin’s “Passion to Win”

The Bangor Daily News has an excellent article on former Maine coach John Winkin who took the Black Bears to the College World Series six times with the most recent appearance in 1986. He also coached at Colby College of Waterville ME and Husson College of Bangor ME during his 53 year career from 1954-2007. He was able to accumlate over 1,000 victories combined with the three schools. He finished his coaching career in 2007 when he suffered a stroke on his daily walk in Bangor. Continue reading

Dreifort looking forward to College Baseball HOF Induction

Darren Dreifort who is known for his MLB career with the Dodgers is currently looking forward to making the trek to Lubbock TX for his induction to the College Baseball Hall of Fame on July 3rd. Dreifort played three seasons at Wichita State where he had his most success in 1993 when he received the Golden Spikes Award. He went 11-1 with a 2.48 ERA while also serving as a DH where he had a .327 average with 22 homers and 66 RBI. Continue reading

Brooks Wallace Award Finalists

bwa-logo-2009LUBBOCK, Texas – The finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award, honoring the nation’s top shortstop, have been selected by the College Baseball Foundation. The finalist watch list is sponsored by Mizuno.

College Baseball Foundation Pitcher of the Year Seminfinalists Announced

cbfpitchingoftheyearLUBBOCK, Texas — The College Baseball Foundation has narrowed the list of players to 15 semifinalists for the Pitcher of the Year Award.

Stephen Strasburg of San Diego State continues to mow down hitters with his NCAA-leading 164 strikeouts and added a no-hitter to his list of accomplishments on May 8 in a win against Air Force. He is 11-0 with a 1.24 ERA in 87.1 innings of work. Continue reading

Semifinalists for Brooks Wallace Award Announced

LUBBOCK, Texas — The College Baseball Foundation announced today the 15 semifinalists for the 2009 Brooks Wallace Award, which honors the nation’s outstanding shortstop.

“We’re very excited to see how these players are excelling as the college baseball regular season wraps up,” said Raymond Richardson, College Baseball Awards Show chairman and CBF Trustee. “These players have set themselves apart and it will be interesting to see them continue into post-season play.” Continue reading

CBF Releases 2009 Brooks Wallace Shortstop Watch List Sponsored by Mizuno
