OMAHA, Neb. — Nearly a week after a back-and-forth 6-5 victory over Pepperdine sent TCU to the College World Series, the Horned Frogs were at it again.
They scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Texas Tech, 3-2, in their opening round game of the College World Series Sunday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park.

OMAHA, Neb. — Vanderbilt scored four of its five runs with two outs, including all three in a second-inning rally, and that was enough to knock off Louisville, 5-3, in the College World Series opening round.
The Commodores’ big rally started with a pair of walks and a single that loaded the bases for leadoff hitter Dansby Swanson. A wild pitch got Vanderbilt (47-19) on the board and then Swanson tacked on two more, clearing the bases with a rope into left-centerfield for a double. OMAHA, Neb. — The UC Irvine Anteaters rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to defeat Texas, 3-1, in the 2014 College World Series opener at TD Ameritrade Park.
Taylor Sparks capped a 3-for-4 day with a one-out RBI triple to tie the game. His second extra-base hit of the game scored Adam Alcantara and chased Texas starter Nathan Thornhill. Continue reading CBD Photo Gallery: Irvine Rallies Past Texas In Eighth
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Things pretty much went the way Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee drew them up in Sunday afternoon’s elimination game.
He said as much himself after the game.
“It kind of went the way it was scripted,” Lee said. “[Justin] Calomeni came out and gave us some quality outs. [Bryan] Granger came in, did what he needed to do to shorten the game to get to [Reed] Reilly.
“This is the fifth game of this Regional and there’s been four one-run ballgame and one two-run game. Just shows you how competitive this Regional is.”
The Mustangs scored in each of the first four innings, building a 5-1 lead and held on as Sacramento State scrapped back before falling 6-5.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly and Regional winner’s bracket games just don’t seem to get along. And routine flyballs are the instigator.
For the second year in a row, a flyball that should have been a routine out changed the momentum of Cal Poly’s Regional winner’s bracket contest. Pepperdine (41-16) took advantage, scoring two runs in the seventh inning to take a 2-1 victory Saturday night at Baggett Stadium.
“That was a tough one. We let an opportunity slide by,” Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee said. “Casey [Bloomquist] has been our most consistent pitcher all year. He showed that again tonight.”

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After losing 4-2 to Cal Poly on Friday night, first baseman Rhys Hoskins said Sacramento State wasn’t going to go “two-and-que” (being eliminated after losing the two first games).
The MLB Draft prospect did his part to assure that the Hornets’ season didn’t end Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium. Hoskins reached base three times and cut down the potential tying runner at home in the ninth inning.
Sacramento State (40-23) scored three runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and then held on through a wild ninth inning. In the final frame, Arizona State big bopper RJ Ybarra knocked a two-run homer and the Sun Devils (33-24) put the tying runner on third base, but Hoskins fired home on a chopper and got runner Drew Stankiewicz hung in a rundown. Alex Palsha finished off the game by striking out Trever Allen on a high curveball.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The opening day of NCAA Regional play is one of the most intriguing days of baseball, especially if you like good pitching. Nearly every team throws their ace, making for some fantastic pitching duels.
But what happens when your ace leaves early? That’s what happened to Arizona State on Friday afternoon at Baggett Stadium. Lilek injured his sternum in the first inning trying to make a defensive play and had to leave the game after only 15 pitches.

The Pac-12 and the Mountain West were the only two conferences with Southern California squads still active, but that didn’t mean there was any less drama on the final day of the college baseball regular season.
USC went for a second upset — and the series win — of the No. 1 team in the nation. UCLA was trying for the sweep of No. 13 Washington. And San Diego State was trying to swim the rough currents of the Mountain West loser’s bracket for the second straight year.
Could the Aztecs knock top-seeded UNLV off for the second time in as many days?

Have to keep the roundup of the exciting final full day of Southern California action to a minimum tonight as I’m headed out from Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif. after the WCC Championship and driving to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Mountain West finale tomorrow.
(Well, I ended up getting booted from Banner Island before I could finish up, so I made a pit stop in Barstow to rest the legs and finish up the SoCal Roundup. I will have more from the WCC Championship later when I arrive and settled in at UNLV.)
But here’s Saturday’s SoCal Roundup complete with photo galleries from Cal State Fullerton and Banner Island Ballpark:

The Mountain West Conference Tournament had a couple of exciting finishes and officially has a team swinging a mean scythe. The West Coast Conference has its championship game participants and it will be a familiar face-off.
Oh…and some guy named Garza happened to throw nine innings without the other team getting a hit and there might have been an upset of the No. 1 team in the country.
All that plus more in a super exciting final Friday regular season edition of the Southern California College Baseball Roundup:
