MAC Weekend Recap (Feb. 27th-March 1st)

macAkron (5-4):

The Zips lost a couple of 1-run games and salvaged a win against Belmont over the weekend. They lost on Friday 6-5 to Mercer despite Dom Iero going 2-4 with a run and an RBI. They bounced-back nicely with an 8-3 win over Belmont. Joey Havrilak was 2-4 with a home run and 2 RBI in the win. Jon Pusateri gave up 3 hits and 1 walk over 5 scoreless innings. They dropped a tough one 5-4 to Notre Dame. Daulton Mosbarger was 2-3 with 2 RBI in the loss.

Ball State (5-5):

Ball State had an interesting weekend as they played in four one-run games, but unfortunately they came out on the losing end of three of those. They lost their first game to #25 Illinois 1-0. Scott Baker gave up the game’s only run over 8 innings of work allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk, while striking out nine. They came back to defeat Illinois in their second game of the weekend 2-1. Zach Plesac got it going on the mound allowing just 1 ER on 3 hits and 2 walks over 7.1 innings with 4 strikeouts. Alex Call was 4-4 at the plate with an RBI. The Cardinals then lost to West Virginia 7-6 despite Call going 2-5 with an RBI and Alex Maloney going 3-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. After taking a 1-run lead in the top of the 10th, Coastal Carolina game back with two in the bottom half to beat Ball State 7-6 in a heartbreaker. Plesac was 1-3 with a home run, 2 runs and 2 RBI.

Bowling Green State (3-3):

The Falcons took two-out-of-three against Eastern Kentucky this past weekend. They took the first game 13-10 with Brien Bien going 4-5 with 3 runs and 2 RBI and Trey Keegan going 2-3 with 3 runs and 2 RBI. Andrew Lacinak gave up 2 ER on 6 hits and 2 walks over 6 innings, while recording 6 strikeouts. The dropped game two 5-4 despite Keegan having another good game going 2-3 with a run and an RBI. Keegan led the way again in the team’s 15-5 win going 2-3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. He finished the weekend going 6-9 with 7 runs and 5 RBI.

Buffalo (1-4):

Buffalo got off to a rough start losing their first game of the weekend to Bucknell 17-4. Ben Vey was 1-2 with a run and an RBI in the loss. They came back to win the second game 5-3. Nick Sinay was 2-4 with an RBI, while Charlie Sobieraski was 1-2 with a run and an RBI. The third game was cancelled due to weather.

Central Michigan (8-4):

After dropping the first game of the four game series 5-3 to Texas State, CMU came back to win the next three games of the weekend. In the loss Zach McKinstry was 2-3 with an RBI. In their 14-6 win Nick Regnier was 3-4 with 3 runs and an RBI. The Chippewas then won 5-3 thanks to a great pitching effort by Pat Leatherman. He went 7 innings allowing just 5 hits and 1 walk, while striking out six. Pat MacKenzie was 2-4 with 2 runs scored, and Logan Regnier was 2-5 with 2 runs and an RBI. Jason Gamble tossed 6.1 scoreless innings to help give CMU a 2-0 series finale win. MacKenzie was 1-2 with a run scored.

Eastern Michigan (5-8):

After losing the first two games of the weekend to Santa Clara, the Eagles fought back to earn a four game split with a double-header sweep on Sunday. They lost the first game 8-2 with Brennan Williams going 2-2 with walks, and then they dropped game two 5-3. Charlie Land gave up 2 ER on 5 hits and 3 walks over 6 innings. Mike Mioduszewski had a pinch-hit 3-run triple. They won the first game on Sunday 5-4 in 10 innings as Mitchel McGeein was 1-3 with 2 RBI and John Montgomery hit a 2-run home run. Then in a 7 inning game they beat Santa Clara 11-7 with Williams going 3-4 with 2 runs and an RBI.

Kent State (5-4):

Kent State picked up three huge wins over the weekend. The first one came against West Virginia in a game they won 5-2. Nick Jensen-Clagg gave up 2 ER on 5 hits and 3 walks over 6 innings, while striking out five. Zach Beckner was 2-4 with 2 RBI. In the second game they downed Coastal Carolina 9-1 thanks to Luke Burch going 4-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI, as well as Alex Miklos going 3-5 with a run and 3 RBI. Jared Skolnicki was solid on the mound going 7 innings and giving up just 1 ER on 4 hits and 2 walks. The Golden Flash picked up a dramatic come-from-behind 4-3 victory over #25 Illinois in the third game to cap off the big weekend. Jacob Neuschaefer was 2-4 with 2 runs scored and Sawyer Polen was 1-4 with a run and 2 RBI. Eric Lauer came up big on the mound in relief tossing 5 scoreless innings allowing just 2 hits and 1 walk, while striking out six.

Miami (2-5):

The RedHawks started out the weekend with a 7-2 loss to Campbell before bouncing back with a 4-3 win over Furman. In the first game Matt Honchel was 2-4, and he was 3-4 in the second game with a run scored. Also in the second game, Ryan Elble was 2-3 with a run and an RBI. Jacob Banks went 6.2 innings, giving up 3 ER on 5 hits and 3 walks. Miami’s game against Maryland Eastern Shore University was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

Northern Illinois (5-5):

The Huskies took two-out-of-three from Tennessee Tech over the weekend. They took game one 4-2 thanks to superb pitching from Ben Neumann who didn’t allow a hit over 6 innings and only issued 3 walks, while striking out six. Joe Jumonville was 2-4 with a run and an RBI. The Tech bats broke out and crushed NIU 14-2 in the second game of the weekend. Stephen Letz was 2-4 with a home run and 2 RBI. The Huskies returned the favor in the third game winning 18-3. Malique Ziegler was 3-6 with a run and 4 RBI, while Brad Wood was 3-6 with 3 runs and 6 RBI.

Ohio (6-3):

After starting the season 6-0, the Bobcats were swept by Georgia State over the weekend. They lost the first game 10-8 with Mitch Longo going 3-5 with 2 runs, Jake Madsen driving in 3 runs and Cody Gaertner going 2-5 with a run and 2 RBI. Georgia State took the second game 11-4. Garrett Black was 1-2 with an RBI. Ohio lost the third game 3-1 with Madsen going 1-3 with an RBI.

Toledo (3-7):

Toledo was outscored 19-5 in four games against Virginia Tech over the weekend. They lost the first game 9-1 despite a solo homer from A.J. Montoya. They split a double-header on Saturday with identical 1-0 scores. In the 10 inning, 1-0 loss Steven Calhoun started the game and threw 8 shutout innings allowing just 1 hit and 3 walks, while striking out seven. In their 1-0 win Montoya was 1-3 with a run and Ryan Callahan drove in the game’s only run. Caleb Schillace tossed 7 scoreless innings issuing 5 hits and 1 walk, while striking out five. The dropped game four 9-3 with Jordan Kesson going 2-4 with a run scored.

Western Michigan (5-4):

Western Michigan took two-out-of-three from Austin Peay this past weekend winning the first game 9-3. Nick Vogelmeier was 2-4 with 3 runs and 2 RBI, while Kurt Hoekstra was 4-5 with 2 runs and 3 RBI. On the mound Keegan Akin gave up 2 ER on 4 hits and 3 walks over 5 innings, while striking out five. They won the second game 12-8 with Chad Mayle going 6 innings giving up just 1 ER on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts. Hoekstra was 2-5 with an RBI. They dropped game three 6-1 despite Brett Sunde going 2-4 with an RBI. Hoekstra finished the weekend going 7-14 with 5 runs, 4 RBI and a walk.
