ACCLogoGREENSBORO, N.C. (www.theACCom) – North Carolina and Virginia, which have combined for 92 wins and finished 1-2 atop the ACC’s Coastal Division, lead the 2013 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

North Carolina junior third baseman Colin Moran was selected as the ACC Player of the Year in a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches, while Tar Heel junior Kent Emanuel received ACC Pitcher of the Year honors.

Virginia outfielder Joe McCarthy was recognized as the ACC Freshman of the Year, while the Cavaliers’ Brian O’Connor was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the third time in four seasons and for the fourth time in his 10 seasons at Virginia.

Moran, the 2011 ACC Freshman of the Year, is the seventh UNC student-athlete to be named ACC Player of the Year. The Rye, N.Y., native leads in the nation in RBIs with 83 and ranks third among ACC batters with a .376 average. Moran boasts a .504 on-base percentage and is a major reason UNC owns a 47-8 overall record and claimed the top seed for this week’s ACC Baseball Championship at Durham (N.C.) Bulls Athletic Park.

Emanuel, who recently joined Moran in being named a semifinalist for the 2013 Dick Howser Award, owns a 9-3 record and a 2.28 ERA. Emanuel’s 102.2 innings pitched leads all ACC pitchers, and he is currently tied for the league lead in wins. The Woodstock, Ga., native owns a three-year record of 26-8 as a collegiate pitcher. Emanuel is the third UNC student-athlete to earn ACC Pitcher of the Year honors since the award was established in 2005.

Virginia’s McCarthy has enjoyed a stellar freshman season, batting .333 with 47 RBIs and 15 hits for extra bases. Over half of McCarthy’s RBIs came in conference play, where he batted .357. The Scranton, Pa., native adapted to college baseball almost from the start, posting a 36-game on-base streak earlier in the season. McCarthy joined Danny Hultzen (2009) as Virginia’s second ACC Rookie of the Year.

O’Connor leads the Cavaliers into this week’s ACC Championship with 45 wins, marking the eighth time in his 10 seasons Virginia has recorded at least 40 wins (the Cavaliers reached 39 wins each of the other two years). This year’s Virginia team, which was picked to finish third in the Coastal Division in preseason, currently ranks seventh nationally, and the Cavaliers’ 22 regular-season wins were the most of any conference team.

In addition to the nation’s RBI leader in Moran, the 2013 All-ACC team features Virginia outfielder Mike Papi , who leads the nation with a .546 on-base percentage and leads the ACC in batting with a .408 mark, and NC State pitcher Carlos Rodon who tops the national charts with 137 strikeouts in 91 innings.

Florida State’s Scott Sitz (first team) and Clemson’s Daniel Gossett (second team) joined Emanuel as nine-win pitchers on the squad. ACC ERA leader Trent Thornton of North Carolina (8-1, 1.48) was named to the second team and joins teammate Skye Bolt, Virginia’s McCarthy and Florida State’s DJ Stewart to give this year’s freshman class four spots on the 32-member team.

Also included are Georgia Tech’s Daniel Palka, the ACC home run leader with 17, and Maryland’s Charlie White, who leads the ACC and ranks among the nation’s leaders in stolen bases with 39.

Ten schools placed at least one player on the 32-member All-ACC team, which includes one three-time selection in Georgia Tech pitcher Buck Farmer and six student-athletes who were honored for the second time.
