- Texas State starter Mitchell Pitts looked great with his command, striking out seven batters over six innings, giving up two runs on two hits and one walk.
- Texas State 1B Casey Kalenkosky was 3-3 today with two runs, two RBI and a double. Kalenkosky was a JUCO All-American last season at Cisco Junior College
- There was an obvious difference in the bats this season. It wasn’t the hits, but rather the sound. It seems the iconic “ping” is gone, replaced by a wood-like “thud.”
- Nebraska RF Josh Scheffert and Texas State 2B Tyler Sibley each hit homeruns that bounced off the nets in the outfield about 20 feet up. Home runs are not obsolete, but require better contact to get out.
- Texas State P Carson Smith pitched two innings in relief, striking out four. His velocity looked good, but he left a few pitches in the zone, which led to three of Nebraska’s five hits.
- The 20 second pitch clock was a non-issue. If you weren’t aware of it, you wouldn’t know it was even in effect.
- Oklahoma 3B Garrett Beuchele got off to a quick start, hitting a homerun in his first at bat, and finishing 2-4 with 2 RBI.
- Max White started at 2B for Oklahoma, and led the team with three hits.
- Michael Rocha, Kindle Ladd, and Cayle Shambaugh combined to one-hit William and Mary. The Tribe picked up an unearned run in the ninth, while the pitchers struck out nine to only two walks.
- Texas RHP Taylor Jungmann picked up his first career complete game shutout. Jungmann allowed five hits and a walk, while striking out nine.
- The Longhorns’ starting lineup featured a trio of freshman. 3B Erich Weiss was 3-3 with three RBI and a triple, while C Jacob Felts logged one hit and three RBI. RF Mark Payton was 1-4 with two runs.
- Texas started off slow, offensively, picking up only one run and four hits over the first five innings. They scored seven runs on six hits in the following two innings.
- Texas A&M starting pitcher John Stilson struck out nine batters in only six innings, surrendering three hits in the process. Stilson was an All-American last season as a closer, and hasn’t lost a beat in his first game as a starter.
- RHP Ross Stripling struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth, earning the save. With Stilson starting, Stripling has picked up the role of closer on the Aggie staff.
- The Aggies only collected six hits, but DH Matt Juengel hit a solo home run in the fifth. 1B Jacob House led the Aggies with two hits, including a double.
- Definitely not the start the Bears need. RHP Logan Verrett and LHP Josh Turley were smacked around, giving up seven runs on 10 hits by the seventh inning.
- CF Brooks Pinckard and 1B Max Muncy both collected a pair of hits. DH Dan Evatt hit a two-run double in the eighth, cutting the Oral Roberts lead to four runs.
- TCU LHP Matt Purke only threw four innings. Purke was on a pitch count, and is battling minor arm issues. TCU took him out after they built up an 8-0 lead.
- Kansas RHP Nolan Mansfield made his mound debut for the Jayhawks in relief. Mansfield threw four scoreless innings, allowing only a pair of hits to TCU.
- LF Jimmy Waters collected two hits, including a ninth inning triple that hit off the base of the wall in deep centerfield.
- Oklahoma State opened the season with a shutout for the first time in six seasons.
- Cowboy DH Dane Phillips and LF Luis Uribe paced the home team with two hits and three RBI a piece. Phillips added a double and stole a base.
- RHPs Brad Propst, Josh Nielson, and Randy McCurry combined for the shutout, allowing only eight hits and striking out five.
- RHP Randy McCurry returned to action for the first time since suffering an injury during warm-ups prior to the first game last season.
- Texas Tech sophomore CF Barrett Barnes homered in his first at bat. Barnes now has three career home runs on opening day. In two opening day games, Barnes is 5-7 with eight RBI.
- Texas Tech LHP Daniel Coulombe, and RHPs John Neely and Brennan Stewart combined for the shutout, striking out 10 while allowing only two hits and two walks.
- Freshman RF David Paiz picked up three hits and two RBI in his collegiate debut. 2B Jamodrick McGruder also collected three hits in the victory.
- Red Raider DH Nick Popescu finished 2-3 with two runs, two stolen bases, and a pair of walks.
- Missouri scored 10 runs on 10 hits in only six innings. While Cal Poly’s pitching isn’t the strongest, Missouri’s batters haven’t received much respect this preseason, and showed that the .288 average from 2010 doesn’t carry over to 2011.
- Four Tigers collected two hits each. 2B Conner Mach’s RBI double in the sixth was Missouri’s only extra base hit.
- RF Blake Brown scored the winning run in the sixth inning on Eugene Wright’s wild pitch. Missouri scored six runs in the inning to take the lead.
- Prior to a 54-minute rain delay in the middle of the sixth, Missouri was losing 9-4. The Tigers put their six runs across before another rain-delay ultimately ended the game.
