USF Recruit waiting on Decision

OT_306340_FREE_baseball_4University of South Florida commitment and Alonso High School star Jose Fernandez is awaiting a decision by the FHSAA to grant him another year of eligibility. Fernandez turned 18 in June but was never held back from Hillsborough County school system and should be on a college campus. The problem is that Fernandez tried to come on two occasions to the United States from Cuba but was intercepted by the US Coast Guard. He was ordered to not play baseball or attend school in Cuba as punishment for trying to leave the country. He made a third attempt to get to the United States with the third time being the charm. He ended up enrolling at Alonso as a sophomore but should have been a junior. The FHSAA is investigating the situation and should have a decision soon on his eligibility. Fernandez is expected to be a high selection in the 2011 MLB Draft based on his 97 MPH fastball.
