FROM TEAM USA RELEASE
(CARY, N.C.) – Bryce Brentz (Middle Tennessee State) went 3-3 with a solo home run and the Blue Team picked up a 3-1 win over the Red Team at the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) Trials at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
Brentz wasted little time as he kicked off the scoring in the top of the second inning with a 390 foot home run to left centerfield on Red Team starter Drew Pomeranz (Mississippi) for the early 1-0 lead.
The Blue Team added to their lead in the fifth inning as Mike McGee (Florida State) got on board after an error by third baseman Rob Segedin (Tulane). With McGee on second, Rick Hague (Rice) laced a double down the left field line to put the Blue Team up 2-0 with one out. Blake Forsythe (Tennessee) then singled to the right side to score Hague from second and secured a 3-0 lead after five.
The Red Team looked for a comeback bid as they finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Yasmani Grandal (U Miami) lifted a strike over the right field fence on Logan Verrett (Baylor) to bring the score to 3-1. But it wasn’t enough offense as the Blue Team pitchers held the Red Team at bay and closed the game out with a final score of 3-1.
Kyle Winkler (TCU) (1-0) picked up the victory as he was the pitcher of record during the two-run top of the fifth inning for the Blue Team. Starting pitcher Trevor Bauer (UCLA) went two complete innings without allowing a hit. He struck out two batters.
Nick Pepitone (Tulane) got the save.
Bryce Brentz led all hitters, Thursday, going 3-3 with a home run, a double, a stolen base, and an RBI. Rick Hague and Blake Forsythe also picked up a hit and RBI for the Blue Team.
