CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 1 North Carolina scored five runs in the first and bettered that effort with six in the fourth en route to a 15-6 win over No. 28 Elon Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. All-America Dustin Ackley and Mark Fleury drove in three runs each, and Levi Michael homered for the second straight game to lead the Tar Heels (36-11) to their ninth win in the last 10 outings.
The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Phoenix (33-14), who allowed a season-high 15 runs for the second and failed to reach the 10-run mark for the first time in the last nine games.
Florida State 5 Jacksonville 2
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State (34-12) evened the season series with Jacksonville (30-16) Tuesday night as the 10th-ranked Seminoles defeated the Dolphins 5-2 on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The win for the Seminoles snapped a two-game losing streak to the Dolphins, while extending their current win streak to a nation best 13 games.
“It was a good ball game, no errors (by either team),” said head coach Mike Martin. “I was very pleased with our defense.”
Following a one hour and 29 minute weather delay, Hunter Scantling took the mound making his second start of the season. The freshman right hander did not disappoint throwing a career-high six innings to move to 3-0 on the year. Scantling blanked the Dolphins over the first six innings before giving up a pair of runs in the seventh. The Jacksonville, Fla., native left after facing the first three batters to start the top of the seventh.
