Southern Conference Players of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College of Charleston outfielder Matt Mansilla has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Western Carolina starting pitcher Chris Masters has been chosen as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from April 27 through May 3.

Mansilla hit safely in all four games last week as the Cougars were a perfect 4-0, scoring at least two runs in each contest. The senior outfielder scored four times with two homers and five RBIs versus Davidson on Sunday as Charleston powered its way to a 27-10 win and a series sweep. Mansilla also had three hits and a homer on Friday and a two-run homer on Saturday, and the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs in CofC’s 13-7 win over 22nd-ranked Coastal Carolina during the midweek.

Masters worked eight scoreless innings for the second-consecutive Friday start, holding UNC Greensboro to three hits, countering a pair of walks with eight strikeouts. The junior, who improved to 5-2 on the season, carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, working the first four and two-thirds hitless against the Spartans. A native of Marietta, Ga., Masters also tossed a third of an inning of one-hit relief at Charlotte in mid-week action.

The SoCon’s weekly awards are voted on by the league’s baseball sports information directors.
