Trailing 7-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team recorded its second straight come-from-behind win over Central Arkansas scoring four times in the bottom of the ninth for an 8-7 win at Chapman Field.

With the win, the Islanders are now 16-28 on the season and 8-15 in the Southland Conference. Austin, McNeese State and Nicholls State, all five have eight wins in the league.

A&M-Corpus Christi will battle for its first SLC series sweep of the season at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Chapman Field.

Texas State 16 McNeese State 6

SAN MARCOS – An RBI double from Spenser Dennis pushed Paul Goldschmidt across the plate for the final run of the afternoon, giving the Texas State Bobcats its third run rule victory this season, a 16-6 decision over the McNeese State Cowboys Saturday at Bobcat Field.

Texas State improves to 30-10 on the season, reaching its final win total from the 2008 season, and 17-5 in Southland Conference play. The win also extends the streak to 11th-straight games, a feat that has not been accomplished since 1991. McNeese State falls 19-10 overall and 8-15 in SLC play.

Before the game went out of reach for the Cowboys, the foe played the Bobcats tough to open the game. Bret Atwood scored in the bottom of the first when Andy Riche bobbled a ball in left field to give Texas State a 1-0 lead, but McNeese made up the error with a two-run homer from Taylor Freeman to take the lead.

Texas State responded in the bottom of the third with a three run inning for a 4-2 lead. Jason Martinson drew a leadoff walk and shifted to third when Bret Atwood drew chalk on a double to left. A sacrifice fly from Goldschmidt brought in the Martinson, but it was Keith Prestridge who tacked on the final pair of runs with a two-run homer to left field.

Lamar 6 Northwestern State 1

Matison Smith allowed just one run over 7.1 innings and the Lamar defense made some great plays as the Cardinals clinched their first series win over Northwestern State in six years with a 6-1 triumph at Vincent-Beck Stadium Saturday.

Smith (6-3) struck out four and scattered eight hits as he won for the first time since an 8.2-inning outing three weeks ago. Much of his success was due to the fact that he threw 20 first-pitch strikes to the 30 batters he faced. Ricky Testa secured the final five outs without any of the four balls out in play leaving the infield.

Tyler Link raised his batting average 19 points to .361 with a 3-for-4 day that included a walk and two runs. Steven Tucker had two hits, with Chris Dunkin, Quentin Luquette and Ryan Saldivar banging out LU’s three doubles.

Southeastern Louisiana 7 Sam Houston State 5

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Lions lost a three-run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (25-17, 14-9 Southland Conference) regrouped with a pair of runs in the tenth to claim a 7-5 win over the Sam Houston State Bobcats (28-15, 14-9 SLC) on Saturday.

The extra-inning win brought the Lions into a tie for second place in the league with the Bearkats and clinched a series win for Southeastern.

Southeastern struck first on Saturday as an RBI double by senior second baseman Ty Summerlin and a run-scoring single by Josh Cryer staked the Lions to a 2-0 lead after the first half inning.

Unfortunately, for the Lions, sophomore right hander Brandon Efferson ran into trouble in the bottom of the first as a two-run homer by Nick Zaleski tied the score at 2-2 after one.

Efferson settled down after that. The Zachary native allowed just three hits and a hit batsmen from the second through the eighth inning and retired ten consecutive batters at one point.

Meanwhile, the Lion offense went about reclaiming the lead. Summerlin struck again in the third inning with a solo shot to right field. The first home run of the season for the Vancleave, Miss. native put Southeastern back out in front 3-2.

Stephen F. Austin 5 UT Arlington 2

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – SFA scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and win its second straight game over UTA at Jaycees Field on Saturday.

The win is the third in a row for SFA (18-23, 9-13 SLC) overall, and the third over the Mavs (23-19, 14-9 SLC) this season. It also puts the `Jacks in position for its first three-game sweep of the season on Sunday.

Jared West started for the `Jacks and went 5.1 innings and allowed just two runs, but it was Alex Moshier that got his fourth win of the season with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. Richard Folmer then saved his third game of the week with a perfect ninth that included two strikeouts.

SFA pitchers combined to only strike out five hitters, but issued only two walks on the afternoon in limiting self-inflicting damage. That is the least amount of walks for SFA in a game that Erich Lehmann did not pitch in since April 1 against Houston Baptist – a span of 15 games. SFA also banged out 10 hits, giving them 10 straight games with at least 10 hits.

UTSA 9 Nicholls State 4

THIBODAUX, La. — For the second day in a row it took extra innings for the UTSA baseball team to defeat Nicholls. On Saturday, it was a five-run 12th that propelled the Roadrunners to a 9-4 victory at Ray Didier Field.

Although it was the bats that eventually got the job done, the work put in by sophomore right-handed Kevin Clarke out of the UTSA bullpen was the story of the day.

After giving up an RBI single to the second batter he faced in the sixth, Clarke (2-2) blanked Nicholls over the final half dozen innings, retiring 12 straight from the seventh through the 10th. The Huntsville native worked around back-to-back leadoff singles in the 11th, stranding those two base runners at second and third, and allowed just four hits and struck out one in his career-best 6.2 panels (64 pitches). Twelve of his 20 outs came on the ground.
