Lamar 7 UTSA 4
UTSA 7 Lamar 2

SAN ANTONIO — Lamar benefitted from a big inning in game one and UTSA used a big inning in game two as the teams split a doubleheader in the first two games of their Southland Conference series at Roadrunner Field Saturday.

The teams remained a game apart from each other in the SLC standings, with Lamar (24-16, 11-9) maintaining its sixth-place spot and UTSA (20-18, 10-10) holding steady in seventh. Northwestern State, who entered the weekend a half-game ahead of Lamar at 10-7, has yet to play any of its home games with league leader Texas State due to heavy rain in Natchitoches, La. They will attempt a doubleheader on Sunday.

It marked the first time Lamar had lost either end of a doubleheader this season after they had swept a pair from Austin Peay, Columbia and UTPA – all at home.

The series will conclude on Sunday with the rubber game of the condensed weekend at 1 p.m.

Sam Houston State 12 at Nicholls State 0

THIBODAUX, LA – Nick Zaleski, Tyler Knight and Mark Wyatt each produced three RBIs and Jacob Howard threw a seven-inning five hit shutout as Sam Houston State run-ruled Nicholls State 11-0 in a Southland Conference baseball game at Didier Field Saturday.

The victory extends Sam Houston’s winning streak to six games and marks the Bearkats’ second consecutive shutout of the Colonels in the pair’s SLC weekend series. SHSU won 6-0 Friday night.

The two wins over Nicholls also put Sam Houston skipper Mark Johnson over the century mark in cogaching wins with the Bearkat program. Johnson, who ranks No. 18 among NCAA Division I active coaches with a 24-year record of 977-495-3, has won 101 games and lost 62 in his three seasons at Sam Houston. Johnson directed the Kats to the NCAA Regionals in his first two seasons at SHSU.

Stephen F. Austin 6 at McNeese State 1

LAKE CHARLES, La. – After a 15-hour, 50-minute rain delay the SFA baseball team came out swinging and added three runs in the top of the eighth inning in holding on to a 6-1 win over McNeese State Saturday morning.

SFA (15-21, 7-11 SLC) had led 3-1 behind 6.1 innings from Erich Lehmann on Friday night, but a band of storms rolled through the Lake Charles area and forced the delay of the game in the bottom of the seventh. McNeese (17-17, 6-13 SLC) got a hit from Any Riche’ off of Chris Court to start the morning, but Court left him stranded and only allowed one more hit in 2.2 innings of work for his first career save.

The combo of Court and Lehmann held the Cowboys to just seven hits on the afternoon, breaking a 12-game streak for the McNeese offense in which it had at least 10 hits. Lehmann finished with four strikeouts and only one walk in his 6.1 innings, claiming his third straight win to move to 4-3 on the season. With Lehmann’s effort he also passed Sean Wood for the all-time innings lead at SFA, now with 304 career innings.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7 Southeastern Louisiana 4

HAMMOND, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team received strong pitching on Saturday from a trio of hurlers en route to a 7-4 victory over Southeastern Louisiana at Alumni Field to move within a win of their second straight Southland Conference series.

Roy Ferdin started for the Islanders tossing 5/2-3 innings allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout. Brett Gips followed tossing 2-1/3 innings of shutout baseball. Trey Hernandez allowed an unearned run on two hits in the ninth.

“Our pitching staff was excellent today and was the difference in the game,” said head coach Scott Malone, whose team improved to 14-25 overall and 6-14 in the league. “Southeastern is a really talented team with some aggressive hitters, but Roy did a great job of throwing quality strikes in the bottom of the field. He helped himself by really fielding the position well.
