The Warning Track with Brian Foley (April 8th)

I will check in throughout the season with my thoughts on some recent news and notes in College Baseball.

The biggest news on Tuesday was Arizona State dropping a tough road game against Arkansas 7-3 in Baum Stadium. The Razorbacks are now 23-6 while being 10-2 in the SEC. I know some people have questions on the Razorbacks early season schedule but they are 10-2 in the SEC with road series victories over South Carolina and Auburn.

What has been going with the Cal-State Fullerton Titans? They have now lost four out of their last five games with a loss to Arizona State, losing two out of three to UC-Irvine, and losing last evening to Loyola-Marymount. The offensive numbers are way down as they have only been averaging 2.2 runs a game over that same five game stretch. The pitching has not been horrible as they have only allowed 4.6 runs a game in those five games. I just think that Fullerton’s bats are currently going through a little lull and will be hot again once the end of the season comes around.

Since we are talking about Loyola-Marymount, How about the job Jason Gill is doing with the Lions? The team is now 20-14 on the year as they have won 12 out of their last 14 games on the season. Angelo Songco (TCBB’s 36th best prospect) had a huge game against Fullerton with a homer and five RBI. He is currently hitting at .372 clip with 10 homers and 39 RBI.

What is the deal with Boston College’s struggles this season during mid-week games? They are currently 4-3 in mid-week action in New England against less talented opponents. They picked up a 5-2 loss on Tuesday to regional rival UMass and have a huge RPI showdown on Wednesday against URI which could affect each team’s chances of making the NCAA tourney.

I was asked a few weeks back by a fan which conference I thought was the best in the nation. My immediate response was the Big West when Fullerton was far and away the best team in the country. I feel even stronger with this opinion after seeing UC-Irvine go into Fullerton and take two out of three games. Long Beach State is back on track as they had a seven game winning streak going for the last two weeks but have dropped back to back 4-3 games to San Diego State and UC-Riverside. You will have to check out Colin’s Regional Projections which will be posted on Thursday to see how many Big West teams will be in the NCAA Tourney.

How many people in the country actually saw Kansas State being 24-8 on the year? I am not one of them!

I will hopefully be back tomorrow with some more random thoughts.

URI has had the same issues with mid wek games also losing to Holy Cross and yesterday make two Bryant, who is not a bad team . but a killer for potential tournament teams to lost to.
Todays game will be important for both teams in their hopes to make the field of 64.
