INDIANAPOLIS — Cleveland State University senior Josh Hungerman and Valparaiso University sophomore Jon Gulbransen have been named Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week for the period of March 30-April 5.

The designated hitter went 4-for-5 against Ohio University on Tuesday and 4-for-5 vs. Eastern Michigan University on Wednesday. He drove in eight of CSU’s 10 runs against EMU with a grand slam, three-run blast and run-scoring single.

Hungerman ranks among League leaders in slugging percentage (1st, .663), home runs (1st, 7), RBI (2nd, 31), runs (T-3rd, 22), total bases (4th, 61), batting average (5th, .348) and on-base percentage (7th, .402). He has also struck 52 batters in 45 innings as a left-handed pitcher.

Cleveland State improved to 9-16 overall with a 4-1 week. The Vikings knocked off Ohio on Tuesday, Eastern Michigan on Wednesday and took two of three from Valparaiso over the weekend.

A native of Appleton, Wis., Gulbransen notches Pitcher of the Week honors after pitching seven scoreless innings in a 10-5 win over Cleveland State on Saturday. He allowed just one walk and two hits while striking out six for the Crusaders.

Gulbransen improved his record to 4-3 and ERA to 4.68 with the performance against Cleveland State. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is now better than 3-to-1 (34 SO, 11 BB) and his hits-per-inning average is less than one (39 H, 42.1 IP)

The left-hander’s quality start was his second scoreless effort of at least seven innings in 2009.

Cleveland State returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Duquesne University at 5 p.m. ET. Valparaiso is back on the diamond Wednesday when it travels to Indiana University at 4 p.m.
