LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Pitching was on display at Jim Patterson Stadium Saturday night as six pitchers combined to allow two earned runs on seven hits and three walks in 17.0 innings, as Jimmy’s Jets defeated Xan’s Zephyrs 2-1 in game two of the 2008 Pizza Bowl intra-squad series.

Despite the two games to none lead for the Jets, game three is set for Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Patterson Stadium. Admission is free.

In Saturday’s game, the Jets took a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Catcher Kyle Cheesebrough doubled to the wall in left center with one out and Neil Holland followed with a single that plated Cheesebrough. When right fielder Alec Lowrey mishandled Holland’s base hit, he advanced to third, and DH Tim Hayes hit a roller to third that plated Holland.

The Zephyrs got on the board in the top of the sixth when Phil Wunderlich began a two-out rally with a bloop single to left and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jeff Arnold then ripped an RBI single to left, cutting the lead to a single run.

Freshman righty Mike Nastold (1-0) took the hill for the Jets and worked 5.2 innings, allowing a run on four hits and a pair of walks, striking out three to earn the win. Holland then took the hill for 1.1 innings, retiring all four he faced, three by way of the strikeout.

Gavin Logsdon tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Thomas Royse set down the side in order in the ninth, to earn the save.

Freshman righty Derek Self (0-1) opened the game for the Zephyrs and went six strong innings, giving up two runs, just one of which was earned, scattering three hits and a walk, striking out three to take the hard-luck loss.

Gabriel Shaw finished up with two perfect innings, striking out two.

Cardinal pitchers came out of the pen for both teams and retired all 16 batters they faced.

Cheesebrough and Josh Richmond had the only extra-base hits on the evening, each cracking a double.

Wunderlich enjoyed the only multi-hit effort, going 2 for 4.

The final game of the series has a pair of righties in redshirt sophomore Tyler Mathis working for the Zephyrs and junior Matt Lea on the hill for the Jets.
