ARLINGTON, Texas – Former UTA Baseball standout Chad Comer has been hired as an Assistant Coach for the UTA baseball program, Head Coach Darin Thomas has announced.

“I feel very excited and blessed to have this opportunity,” Comer said. “I have had the chance to work with a first class organization the last 5 years in the Texas Rangers, but having the chance to come back to my alma mater and impact and grow the program I came from is a dream come true. I couldn’t ask for a better staff to be part of either. Both Coach Thomas and Coach Wente are not only great coaches and have a wealth of knowledge, but above all are great men and I am very excited to join them and help continue to push the UTA baseball program forward year after year.”

“I am very excited to add Chad to our coaching staff,” said Thomas. “He will be a great mentor to our hitters as he helps them in their development within our program. He brings a wealth of knowledge and passion that our guys will benefit from on a daily basis.”

Comer spent the 2019 season as a hitting instructor at the Rangers’ Arizona complex. He spent the three seasons prior with the Dominican Summer League Rangers as a hitting coach. Comer originally joined the Texas organization as a coach on the Hickory staff in 2015. The former UTA standout played two seasons in the Atlanta Braves organization, concluding his playing career with High-A Lynchburg in 2012. He was drafted by the Braves in the 29th round of the 2011 June Draft following four successful seasons with the Mavs.

During his four-year career at UTA, the Mansfield native was a member of the 2010 Johnny Bench Award Watch List (top collegiate catcher), a three-time All-Southland Conference selection and a four-year starter for the Mavericks, finishing his college career in the top 10 of several UT Arlington career categories.
