OMAHA, Neb. — Junior starting pitcher Tommy Henry tossed a three-hit complete-game shutout on Monday (June 17) to help lead the University of Michigan baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Florida State in the Wolverines’ second game of the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park.

Henry’s historic outing marked the third College World Series complete-game shutout in program history, as he joined Marvin Wisniewski (June 11, 1953 vs. Stanford) and Steve Howe (June 2, 1978 vs. Baylor). The complete game itself was the program’s ninth.

With a strikeout in the fifth, Henry (11-5) also broke Michigan’s single-season record for strikeouts previously held by Oliver Jaskie and Jim Burton (119). Henry, who finished with 10 strikeouts for the day, now has 127 for the year.

Backed by solid defense, Henry’s dominance on the mound held the Seminoles at bay as the lefty allowed just two hitters to reach scoring position – one in the first inning and one in the seventh.

Michigan is just one win away from the College World Series finals, and it will take the field next on Friday (June 21). The Wolverines will face the winner of Wednesday’s (June 19) contest between Florida State and Texas Tech.

The Wolverines are 2-0 in the College World Series for the first time since 1962. Michigan has started its national title run with a 2-0 record twice in history and clinched the national championship both times (1953 and 1962).

Much like the opening game of the CWS, the Wolverines scored first. Sophomore Jesse Franklin put Michigan on the board with a solo homer down the right-field line on just the second pitch of the game.

Michigan also put runners in scoring position in the second and third innings, but did not add to its lead until the fifth. Sophomore Jordan Nwogu sent a one-out single through the right side and took third on a base hit from Franklin. With runners on the corners and two outs, senior Jimmy Kerr came up with a clutch base hit to left field that scored Nwogu and gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead.

In addition to timely hitting and incredible pitching, diving defensive plays from first baseman Kerr and senior second baseman Ako Thomas as well as numerous catches from junior Christan Bullock in left field were key in Michigan’s victory, which snapped a seven-game Florida State win streak.
