ProsciaUVA#1 Virginia 8 NC State 4

RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 1-ranked Virginia baseball team racked up 15 hits in an 8-4 victory over NC State Saturday night at Doak Field at Dail Park in Raleigh, N.C. The series is now tied at one apiece, with the rubber game set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

The top four in the Cavaliers’ batting order combined for 10 hits Saturday, with Dan Grovatt (Jr., Tabernacle, N.J.) and Steven Proscia (So., Suffern, N.Y.) each notching three hits. Proscia went 3-for-3 and reached base in all five of his plate appearances. Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) and Keith Werman(So., Vienna, Va.) each had two hits, and Gosselin scored three times out of the leadoff spot. Stephen Bruno(Fr., Audubon, N.J.) added a pair of hits out of the nine-hole for UVa.

#3 Georgia Tech 21 Duke 5

ATLANTA – Derek Dietrich, Tony Plagman and Jeff Rowland had 10 of Georgia Tech’s season-high 24 hits, while the team clinched its fourth-straight Atlantic Coast Conference series with a 21-5 victory over Duke Saturday at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Jackets improved to 24-3 overall and 10-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Duke fell to 16-11 and 3-8 in the ACC.

Virginia Tech 8 #5 Florida State 7

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Virginia Tech used three home runs, including a grand slam by third baseman Ronnie Shaban, to defeat fourth-ranked Florida State and clinch its first-ever series against the Seminoles with an 8-7 victory on Saturday night at Dick Howser Stadium.

The win not only improved Tech’s overall record to 20-9 and its ACC record to 6-5, but it also served as the 400th win in head coach Pete Hughes’ career. Hughes, who is in his 14th year as a head coach and his fourth with the Hokies, needs just two wins to reach 100 at Virginia Tech.

Boston College 11 #12 Clemson 5

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Boston College baseball team scored seven runs in the second inning and junior Pat Dean shut Clemson down after that to take down the No. 10 Tigers, 11-5, Saturday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Dean tossed 8.0 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked two. He gave up the five runs in the first two innings but then returned to form, facing two batters over the minimum for the next six innings. Dean improved to 5-0 on the year with the win.

#15 Miami FL 9 Wake Forest 8 (11 innings)

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 15th-ranked University of Miami baseball team clinched their fourth straight series to open ACC play by beating Wake Forest, 9-8, in 11 innings on a walk-off single to left by Scott Lawson Saturday night at Alex Rodriguez Park. Winners of nine of their last 11, the `Canes used nine stolen bases to win their eighth straight over the Demon Deacons.

After Wake Forest scored two in the ninth to send it into extra innings, neither team got anything going in the 10th. After Wake Forest was retired quickly in the top of the 11th, the Hurricanes seized the opportunity in the bottom of the frame. After Zeke DeVoss led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stephen Perez, Lawson’s flare the other way easily scored DeVoss to give the ‘Canes the win.

Wake Forest Recap

#22 North Carolina 11 Maryland 4

COLLEGE PARK, MD. – Mike Cavasinni’s three hits and Brian Goodwin’s six RBI lifted No. 22 North Carolina over Maryland 11-4 Saturday at Shipley Field. Patrick Johnson earned the win, allowing just two earned runs on five hits in six innings. Carolina bashed 12 hits and matched a season-high with three home runs to improve to 19-10 overall and 3-8 in league play. The Terrapins fall to 12-16 overall and 3-8 in the ACC with the loss.

"Patrick [Johnson] made some pitches when he needed to today, his outing is exactly what we need to not tax our bullpen," head coach Mike Fox explained. "Jesse [Wierzbicki] and Cavasinni carried us today, both are really showing that they are our team leaders."
