Southeastern Louisiana 1 UT Arlington 0

ARLINGTON, Texas – Senior second baseman Ty Summerlin scored the only run of the ballgame to set a school career record, junior third baseman/closer Chris Franklin tied the school’s regular season saves mark and sophomore right hander Brandon Efferson went 7.2 innings to outduel UTA’s Nathan Long as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (19-9, 10-4 SLC) gutted out a 1-0 win over the Texas-Arlington Mavericks (15-14, 8-6 SLC) to clinch a series win and maintain a tie for first place atop the Southland Conference standings on Saturday.

The Lions had their hands full early on against Long. Southeastern managed just one base runner in the first two frames, and the Lions couldn’t find the hit column until a two-out third inning double by sophomore center fielder Cass Hargis.

Fortunately, for the Lions, Efferson was up to the challenge. The Zachary native allowed just four hits and no runs through the first five innings and didn’t allow a runner past second base in his 7.2 innings.

With Efferson keeping the Mavericks at bay, the Lions finally found a way to get on the board against Long. After being held scoreless through five, Summerlin doubled down the left field line with one out. Senior left fielder Brandon Street followed with an RBI single through the left side, and Summerlin beat the throw to the plate to stake Southeastern to a 1-0 lead.

Lamar 4 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 0

BEAUMONT, Texas – Matison Smith struck out five in 8.2 innings to lead Lamar to a 4-0 series-clinching win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Vincent-Beck Stadium Saturday.

Lamar (21-10, 8-6 Southland) won its fourth-consecutive game and recorded its fifth shutout of the season. A&M-Corpus Christi fell to 11-20 and 3-11.

Lamar scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning. Link then scored the eventual game-winner on Steven Tucker’s sacrifice fly to left-center.

The Cardinals pushed three more runs across in the eighth on three singles and a sacrifice bunt. Link led off with a single, moved to second on Taylor’s bunt and stole third before Tucker walked. With the Islanders leading the country in double plays and having already turned two in the series, Tucker stole second on the first pitch to take the DP out of play. Chris Dunkin then singled-home Link to put runners on the corners. Pinch runner Kevin Roebuck stole second before Jeremiah Sammy hit a two-run single to right that made it 4-0. Sammy stole second to give Lamar four in the inning. But Quentin Luquette hit into a double play after Ryan Saldivar had walked to put runners at first and second with one out.
