NCBWA LogoMORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 23 today. William & Mary junior infielder Michael Katz was named National Hitter of the Week, while Stony Brook’s senior right-handed pitcher Frankie Vanderka was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season. Continue reading

Oklahoma names Jamie Pinzino as Pitching Coach

JamiePinzinoBryant_thumb.jpgNORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma head baseball coach Pete Hughes has named Jamie Pinzino as the program’s new assistant baseball and pitching coach. Pinzino, a 12-year veteran in the collegiate ranks and seven-year head coach, comes to Norman after a one-year stint as head coach at William & Mary, preceded by one year as an assistant for the Tribe.

“We are excited about Jamie, Cheryl and baby Henry joining our Sooner family,” stated Hughes. “With Jamie, we have one of the top young head coaches in the country joining our staff.” Continue reading

William and Mary names Brian Murphy as Head Coach

BrianMurphyWILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William and Mary Athletics Director Terry Driscoll announced the promotion of Brian Murphy to head coach of the Tribe baseball program on Tuesday.

Murphy takes over after the resignation of Jamie Pinzino, who was named the pitching coaching at the University of Oklahoma. Murphy spent last season as W&M’s top assistant and recruiting coordinator for the Tribe, serving as the Green and Gold’s hitting coach. Continue reading

CBD Top 100 Countdown: 71. Mitchell Aker (William and Mary)

MitchellAkerWe continue the countdown today with number 71, William & Mary RHP Mitchell Aker. In his freshman campaign with the Tribe, Aker made 24 relief appearances while compiling a 1-1 record and posting a 5.26 ERA. The right-hander worked in 25.2 innings in his first college season and racked up 19 strikeouts in the process. Aker also finished the Tribe season with 5 saves which was good for second on the staff. Continue reading

RALEIGH, N.C. – Using the same recipe its has throughout the 2013 campaign, the William and Mary baseball team received an exceptional pitching performance backed by strong defense and timely hitting to downed No. 23-ranked Ole Miss for the second time in three days, 4-1, in the Sunday elimination game of the Raleigh Regional. With its second NCAA Tournament victory, W&M extends it program-best mark to 39-23, while the Rebels finish the season at 38-24. Continue reading

2013 Raleigh NCAA Regional Day 1 Recap

RALEIGH, N.C. – The William and Mary baseball team opened its 2013 NCAA Tournament in the Raleigh Regional with a milestone victory over No. 23-ranked Ole Miss, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at Doak Field. W&M’s victory over the Rebels marked the Tribe’s first ever NCAA Tournament win as it also set a new single-season school record with 38 wins. A four-run fifth inning propelled the Tribe past the Rebels as W&M plated all four of its runs with two outs. For the year, the Green and Gold improves to 38-22, while Ole Miss falls to 37-23. 2013 CAA Preseason Coaches Poll

CAA LogoRICHMOND, Va. (January 23, 2013) – UNCW, which captured its third CAA baseball championship in the past nine years last season, has been picked to win the conference title again in 2013 according to a vote of the league’s head baseball coaches.

The Seahawks received five first-place votes and finished atop the poll with 75 points. Hofstra picked up three first-place votes and was second with 69 points. James Madison was chosen third with 62 points and Delaware got two first-place votes and was fourth with 57 points. George Mason placed fifth in the voting, followed by Old Dominion, William & Mary, Towson, Northeastern and Georgia State. Continue reading

William and Mary names Jamie Pinzino as Head Coach

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William and Mary athletics director Terry Driscoll announced the hiring of Jamie Pinzino to the post of head baseball coach at the College on Monday. Pinzino, a two-time conference coach of the year at Bryant University, spent six years as a head coach, before serving as an assistant the last two seasons at Northeastern and William and Mary. In 2011-12, he was the Tribe’s pitching coach and served as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Continue reading
