After a rough opening series against Samford we realize we have a lot of work to do in order to be the team we want to become in May. With a team loaded with newcomers this first series was a huge learning experience for us and I’m confident we will bounce back and play much better baseball this coming weekend when we head on the road to play Georgia State. We’re down to just four days until opening game for the 2011 Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck baseball team. We finally hit the road and head to Birmingham to take on Samford University of the SoCon Conference. It will be nice to trade the winter coats and twelve inches of snow for sixty degrees and sunshine in Alabama.

T-minus 12 days until the Leatherneck baseball team begins the 2011 season. As the days draw near, you can feel the energy from the players and coaches increasing. I think it is safe to say, we are ready to get rid of the snowshoes and lace up the cleats. We have a very talented group of guys that have joined the team this year and are very excited to see what we can do on the field together. The 2011 Collegiate Baseball Season Is Upon Us!
The Western Illinois Leathernecks will be writing a weekly journal throughout this upcoming season to keep you updated on our successes on and off the field. Last year was a rough season to say the least. Losing a head coach to leukemia and a pitcher to a motorcycle accident in the same year would cause a rough season at any university. Without a head coach throughout the entire fall, the team struggled to find an identity. Even with the work we put in after Christmas break, the lack of a fall season showed on the diamond. MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois head baseball coach Mike Villano announced the 2011 baseball schedule, Thursday, Nov. 18.
The Fighting Leathernecks will face four opponents who participated in the 2010 NCAA Baseball Tournament. They include Kansas State, which finished third in the Big XII a season ago, Atlantic 10 champion Saint Louis University, Summit League opponent Oral Roberts and Illinois State University. MACOMB, Ill. – Devin VanBrooker (Plymouth, Ill./Southeastern HS/College of Lake County), a member of the Western Illinois University baseball team, died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident Tuesday night (May 4) in Macomb.
VanBrooker was 21 years old. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Born on January 19, 1989, VanBrooker was the son of Daniel and Susan VanBrooker, with one brother, Tony. He signed with the Fighting Leathernecks baseball team last summer after playing his first two years at the College of Lake County.

HAMMOND, La. – The 2010 Southeastern Louisiana baseball team now has the school’s all-time best winning streak all to itself. After tying the mark Friday, the Lions broke it Saturday, taking their 11th straight game to improve to 11-0 on the year. The 4-1 victory over Texas Southern also clinched the series for Southeastern.

ELMHURST, Ill. – After winning its record 12th straight league championship a year ago, Oral Roberts was a unanimous choice to claim its 13th consecutive Summit League crown in 2010 as voted on by the league’s eight head coaches.
The Golden Eagles collected seven first-place votes for a total of 49 points. Centenary came in second with 39 points, followed closely by South Dakota State in the third slot with 36 points and the final first-place vote. Southern Utah (30 points) and North Dakota State (27 points) were each separated by three points apiece for the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Oakland (16 points), IPFW (14 points) and Western Illinois (13 points) rounded out the voting.
