BATON ROUGE – Shortstop Austin Nola knocked in three runs, and No.5 LSU staged a two-out rally in the eighth inning, breaking a 6-6 tie to beat No.30 Northwestern State, 8-6, Wednesday night in Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers (32-6) are on a six-game winning streak and remain undefeated in mid-week contests this season. Northwestern State dropped to 25-12 with the loss.

LEXINGTON, Va. - The top five hitters in the lineup went 10 for 21 with 10 RBIs as No. 26 VMI defeated No. 1 Virginia, 12-3, in front of a record crowd of 1,463 fans at Gray-Minor Stadium Wednesday night.  The win is VMI’s first-ever over a top-ranked opponent and improves the Keydets to 29-5 on the season.  The Cavaliers fall to 27-8 with the loss, the team’s first mid-week setback in 10 games this season.

ArkansasBaseball #3 LSU 6 Southern Miss 5 (12 innings)

METAIRIE, La. – Pinch hitter Wet Delatte lined a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift No. 3 LSU to a 6-5 victory over Southern Mississippi Wednesday night in the annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic in front of 9,370 fans Wednesday night at Zephyr Field.

After Southern Miss second baseman Taylor Walker launched a solo homer in the in the top of the twelfth, the Tigers (25-4) responded in the bottom of the frame when pinch hitter Mason Katz doubled off the wall in left field and Leon Landry ripped a triple into right that scored Katz and knotted the game at 5-5.

2010 Preseason Southern Conference Polls

MattMurray SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 2009 Southern Conference regular season champion, Elon, and tournament champion, Georgia Southern, have been tabbed co-favorites for the 2010 campaign in balloting of the league’s 11 baseball coaches. The media members who cover SoCon baseball have selected Elon as the top team in 2010, narrowly edging out GSU.

The Phoenix received five of 11 possible first-place votes and 91 points from the league’s head coaches while garnering 13 of 27 first-place nods on the media ballots. Coach Mike Kennedy’s team returns three starters in the field and 12 of 15 pitchers from the 2009 team which went 23-4 in the SoCon and 41-18 overall en route to winning its second consecutive league regular season title.

Furman signs Eight for 2010-2011 Season

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Furman head baseball coach Ron Smith today announced the signing of eight players to national letters of intent, including six from South Carolina.

"We are very happy with this group and pleased we could stay in state for several of them," said Smith on Tuesday. "Coach (Britt) Reames and coach (Jeff) Whitfield deserve a tremendous amount of credit for identifying these fine young men and their talent and getting them to Furman."

Western Carolina releases 2010 Schedule

RossHeffleyWCU Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina third-year head baseball coach Bobby Moranda today released his squad’s 2010 schedule which includes six teams that made the NCAA Baseball Championships a season ago, three of which were number one seeds. The 56-game slate features 28 home dates, three-game series with each Southern Conference foe and non-conference meetings with perennial powers Clemson, Charlotte, East Carolina, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Tennessee.

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – Already having set two program academic records in 2008-09, UCF baseball learned that its efforts in the classroom are standing out in Conference USA as well. The Knights ranked first of all C-USA baseball teams with an annual grade-point average of 3.174 to receive the league’s Sports Academic Award.
