NCBWA Players of the Week (May 14th)

NCBWA LogoMORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 12, today. Florida State freshman outfielder D.J. Stewart was named National Hitter of the Week, while West Virginia sophomore left-handed pitcher Harrison Musgrave was named National Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season. 2013 Big 12 Preseason Coaches Poll

OklahomaOmaha.jpgOklahoma has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 Big 12 baseball regular season. In a vote by the league’s head coaches, the Sooners earned six first-place votes, totaling 62 points. League newcomer TCU tallied the remaining three first-place votes and 55 points for the second place spot.
This marks the second time the Sooners have been tabbed to win the Conference’s regular season title. In 2011, OU also received six first-place votes. Oklahoma has never claimed a Big 12 title and has won the postseason crown on just one occasion – at the inaugural event in 1997. Read the rest of this entry »

West Virginia to hold 3 Big 12 Series in Charleston, WV

West Virginia names Randy Mazey as Head Coach

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Randy Mazey, who has more than 20 years of collegiate baseball coaching experience, has been named West Virginia University’s 19th head baseball coach, Director of Athletics Oliver Luck announced today.

“We are delighted to welcome Randy into our Mountaineer family,” says Luck. “He is a blue-collar guy whose father was a coal miner, and he was raised in Johnstown, Pa. He understands the work ethic that all Mountaineers share, and in that regard he is one of us. Read the rest of this entry »

2012 Big East Preseason Coaches Poll Released

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – On the heels of back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championship and a runner-up finish in the BIG EAST last season, St. John’s has been tabbed as the favorite to win the 2012 BIG EAST baseball championship by the league’s 12 head coaches.

The Red Storm received eight of a possible 11 first-place votes in the preseason poll. The coaches also chose St. John’s outfielder Jeremy Baltz as the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and named Louisville righthanded pitcher Justin Amlung the BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Big East Weekend Preview (May 19th-21st)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seven teams are fighting for five remaining spots in the BIG EAST Championship as only three teams have assured themselves of postseason appearances. Connecticut is the only team that knows its fate, as the Huskies clinched their first outright BIG EAST title last week and will be the No. 1 seed at the BIG EAST Championship. Pittsburgh and St. John’s also have punched tickets to the championship. Seton Hall and USF begin the weekend tied for the eighth and final tournament spot, with USF holding the tiebreaker over the Pirates.  USF hosts Pittsburgh and Seton Hall hosts Georgetown this weekend. Notre Dame and Louisville battle in an important three-game set, with the final two games of the series televised on the CBS Sports Network. All of the BIG EAST series will begin on Thursday, with Saturday being the final day of regular-season play. PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Less than half of the BIG EAST baseball season remains and Connecticut holds a two-game lead on first place. The Huskies enter the weekend with a 12-game winning streak, the longest current streak in the nation. Pittsburgh is in second place, a half-game ahead of St. John’s. The Red Storm and Panthers will battle in Pittsburgh this weekend. Last weekend, three BIG EAST pitchers tossed complete-game shutouts including St. John’s Kyle Hansen (vs. Notre Dame), Connecticut’s Matt Barnes (vs. Georgetown) and Pittsburgh’s Matt Iannazzo (vs. Rutgers).
