NAIA recap for March 10th

#1 Lubbock Christian split a double-header with Division II Angelo State, losing 10-4 and winning 9-1. RF Austin Lasprilla was 2-4 with four RBI for the Rams in the first game. In the second game, Shane Ingram got a win in his first start of the season, holding the Rams to one hit in four innings. The Chaparrals swept Northwestern Oklahoma State over the weekend, and their record is now 17-7. Ingram is their ERA leader, at 1.93.  Upcoming: Oklahoma Christian March 12-13.

#2 Lewis-Clark State is 14-1. They got two wins last weekend against Division II Central Washington. The Warriors will play their first road games of this season at Concordia-Portland March 12-14 and Division II Saint Martin’s March 15-16. Continue reading

NAIA recap for March 3rd

#1 Lubbock Christian won two of three against University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, and swept a double-header against University of the Southwest. The Chaparrals are now 13-6. Their leading hitter is C Joe Staley with a .455 average, and their ERA and strikeout leader is Paul Gonzalez, 2-1, 1.11 ERA, and 29 strikeouts with 24 1/3 innings pitched. Upcoming: at Northwestern Oklahoma State (11-3 with two wins over Wayland Baptist) March 5-6, Angelo State March 9. The Angelo State double-header will be televised by Stretch Internet.

#2 Lewis-Clark State is 12-1, and their two most recent wins were against in-state rival College of Idaho, 16-8 and 7-6. In the second game, RF Gino Casini drew a base-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to bring in the winning run. Colby Hawk is 3-0, 0.00 ERA for the Warriors; Tyler Lichty is 2-0, 1.47 ERA, 17 strikeouts. Upcoming: Division II Central Washington March 6-7.

#3 British Columbia has started their season 10-1. They have yet to play a home game, and their only loss was 6-2 to #10 Fresno Pacific. 3B Keaton Briscoe is batting .400 for the Thunderbirds, CF Blake Carruthers is batting .387. RHP Taylor King is 1-0, 1.23 ERA with three saves, LHP Mark Hardy is 2-1, 3.00 ERA with 20 strikeouts. Upcoming: at Corban March 5-6. Continue reading

NAIA recap for February 17

After splitting four double-headers, #1 Lubbock Christian finally moved above .500 with an 11-0 win over Lindenwood (8-2, with two wins over Auburn-Montgomery). Paul Gonzalez, Hunter Scott, and Tanner Vickers combined for the shutout. 2B Richard Bohlken went 2-3 with three RBI. Joe Staley leads the defending champions in hitting with a .435 average, and Paul Gonzalez is 1-0, 0.00 ERA, and 15 strikeouts with 12 1/3 innings pitched. Upcoming: Texas-Brownsville Feb. 19-20.

Steven Taft#2 Lewis-Clark State started their season the same way as 2009, with an opening weekend loss to Concordia-Portland. CF Calvin Nagy scored the winning run in the top of the ninth to give Concordia a 7-6 win, but the key performance for the Cavaliers was by reliever RHP Steven Taft, who came on in the fifth inning, and pitched four scoreless innings, scattering four hits, and picking off two baserunners. CBB’s NAIA pre-season Top 10

The 54th NAIA baseball season starts on Saturday, with Wayland Baptist at Texas-Brownsville, and the Sun Conference All-Star Game in Daytona Beach, FL. Next, Ave Maria (a brand-new school located in Naples, FL, not just a new program) hosts Warner on Jan. 26. On the 27th, Cal Baptist hosts Simpson, and last year’s runners-up Point Loma Nazarene hosts a good Cal State San Marcos team. Continue reading

At Lubbock, TX:

#1 Lubbock Christian defeated #18 Wayland Baptist 15-6, to qualify for the Baseball National Championship tournament in Lewiston for the first time since 2006. Ross Blondin went 4-6 for the Chaparrals, with two doubles and a triple. Continue reading

#1 Lubbock Christian was upset by #18 Wayland Baptist 6-2. Marcus Limon pitched a complete game for the Pioneers, scattered nine hits, struck out 14. The Chaparrals’ starter, Jakob Cunningham, also went the distance, allowed eight hits, struck out nine. Continue reading

NAIA recap for March 12

#1 Oklahoma City swept a three-game series against Rogers State, and defeated Calumet. The Stars are now 22-1, but they get their first serious challenge of the season with a series at #17 Wayland Baptist March 15-16.

#2 Lee swept Emmanuel, but trailed Trevecca Nazarene 8-6 after 6 1/2 innings. The Flames closed to 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Junior Rodriguez. The winning run came in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Julian Alvarez. The Flames then lost their second game of the season while splitting a double-header with Milligan (Johnson City, TN). The loss was 2-1, and the winning run was scored when Spencer Street was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Flames are now 23-2. They visit Faulkner March 13-14, and Trevecca Nazarene March 17. Continue reading
