13regionalprojections_smAs we’re now well into the 2013 college baseball season, College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to Selection Monday with our latest 2013 Regional Projections.

For this week’s projections, instead of being solely compiled based on RPI like they have been done in past weeks, every aspect was taken into consideration. College Baseball Daily’s Ginger Poulson (@gingerpoulson) compiled this list after analyzing RPI, overall records, conference standings, overall talent and several other factors. Brawl between Sacramento State vs UC Riverside (Video Included)

UC-RiversideSchedulePhotoThe Sacramento State Hornets held their home opener on Friday afternoon against UC-Riverside. In the third inning, UC Riverside Eddie Young got caught in a rundown and appears to be tagged out aggressively by Sacramento State’s Andrew Ayers who pushes Young after the tag. Young then turns around throwing a punch at Ayers before more players come into the fray. UC Riverside’s Eddie Young and Drake Zarate and Sacramento State’s Andrew Ayers were ejected. Each player will now face an NCAA mandated four game suspension for fighting. Last season, Ayers was named the WAC player of the year. The No. 6 ranked Bruins will travel to Waco, Texas to take on the Baylor Bears this weekend. It will be UCLA’s first visit to Baylor in program history. UCLA (2-1) is coming off a series victory against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Bruins dropped the opener 6-2 in 10 innings Friday night, but rallied on Saturday by defeating the Gophers 14-0. On Sunday, sophomore starter Grant Watson kept the Gophers quiet by throwing six scoreless innings and tallying a career high eight strikeouts. Baylor (1-3) is coming off a win at home Tuesday against Texas State. The Bears were swept on the road at UC Irvine last weekend. Read the rest of this entry »

North Dakota Baseball set to join WAC in 2013-2014

NorthDakotaLogoDENVER—The Western Athletic Conference announced today that an invitation for affiliate membership has been issued to and accepted by North Dakota to join the conference in baseball starting with the 2013-14 academic year.

“We are pleased to announce the addition of North Dakota to our baseball league,” said WAC Interim Commissioner Jeff Hurd. “UND will be a great fit with the other baseball teams in the conference and we believe North Dakota will play a viable role in advancing WAC baseball into the future.” Read the rest of this entry »

2013 WAC Preseason Coaches Poll

WACLogoDENVER - Dallas Baptist has been selected as the favorite to win the 2013 Western Athletic Conference regular season baseball crown in a vote by the league’s 10 head coaches.

The Patriots received 80 points and eight first place votes after a 41-19 season last year as an independent. DBU advanced to its second-straight NCAA Tournament last season. DBU joins the WAC this season after playing as a Division I independent the past nine seasons. As an independent, the Patriots have made three trips to the NCAA tournament, including an NCAA Super Regional appearance in 2011. Read the rest of this entry »

Northern Colorado Joins WAC as Affiliate Member in Baseball in 2014

NorthernColorado_thumb.jpgDENVER, CO - The Western Athletic Conference announced today that an invitation for affiliate membership has been issued to and accepted by Northern Colorado to join the conference in baseball starting with the 2013-14 academic year.

“We are pleased to announce the addition of Northern Colorado to the WAC baseball family,” said WAC Interim Commissioner Jeff Hurd. “UNC will be a great fit with the other baseball teams in the league. We expect that they will match up well both competitively and geographically.”

Northern Colorado baseball can be traced back to 1895 when the university was named State Normal School. The Bears were part of the Rocky Mountain Conference (which became the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 1969) until 1972 when the team joined the Great Plains Athletic Conference (1973-76). In 1991, the team officially became part of the Division II North Central Conference until 2003, when the team began its reclassification back to Division I. The Bears have made 10 Division I College World Series appearances. UNC has made 20 Division I regional appearances.

New Mexico State Releases 2013 Schedule

New Mexico State AggiesLAS CRUCES, N.M. –  As everyone is in the final month of the 2012 year, New Mexico State University head coach Rocky Ward has announced the Aggies’ schedule for the upcoming season.

NM State, who is coming off a 35-win season, a Western Athletic Conference regular-season co-championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, will play a total of 51 regular-season games, including 26 chances for Aggie fans to see their team at Presley Askew Field.

“The 2013 schedule is another challenging one for us,” Ward said. “We will play a 27-game conference schedule for the first time in several years, but we still have some quality non-conference opponents as well.”

The Aggies will play five teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season, including two teams that won a regional at the tournament and were part of the final 16-team field, two teams that will be part of the WAC this season and in-state rival New Mexico.  Five of NM State’s opponents also finished in the Top 40 of the NCAA Division I rankings, including three that finished in the Top 25.

Texas State releases 2013 Schedule

San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State Athletic Department and head coach Ty Harrington released the 2013 baseball schedule on Thursday, revealing a 55-game slate that features 30 games at Bobcat Ballpark and 25 away games. The Bobcats’ season will open with their annual home tournament, the Bobcat Invitational, on February 15-17. La Tech releases 2013 Schedule

RUSTON, La. – Head coach Wade Simoneaux and the Louisiana Tech baseball team have announced the 2013 schedule, featuring eight home series at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park over the course of the upcoming season.

In Simoneaux’s 11th year at the helm of the Bulldog baseball program, Tech will host a bevy of talented teams in 2013 including contests against six teams that made the NCAA Baseball Tournament in 2012 in a combined 21 games scheduled this season.
