#2 Virginia 8 Towson 5

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team scored an 8-5 win over Towson Tuesday at Davenport Field. Kenny Swab (Jr., Kernersville, N.C.) went 3-for-3 and reached base safely in all five of his trips to the plate, while the Cavaliers’ bullpen buckled down to retire 14 of the final 15 Towson batters to seal the win.

Shane Halley (So., Burke, Va.), the first of three UVa relievers, pitched three innings to earn the win and improve to 1-0 this season. Justin Thompson (So., Danville, Va.) pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts before Kevin Arico (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to notch his ACC-best ninth save of the season.

FSUBoyd TAMPA, Fla. – A seven-run first inning proved to be the difference Tuesday night as No. 3 Florida State (7-0) defeated No. 5 Florida (5-1) 10-5 in the second game of the Florida Four Tournament on Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla. The game was the first of four meetings between these intra-state rivals.

With the 10 runs and 13 hits, the Seminoles have posted double-digits hits and runs in each of their first seven games to start the 2010 campaign. Dating back to last season, Florida State has registered double-digit hits in 12 consecutive games.

2010 Big South Preseason Coaches Poll


CoastalCarolina CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – For the third consecutive year, Coastal Carolina University‘s baseball team has been voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office.  In addition, the coaches voted Chanticleers’ junior outfielder Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla.) the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year and Coastal Carolina junior Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va.) the League’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

VMI adds three for 2010-2011 Season


VMI Baseball LEXINGTON, Va.- Head coach Marlin Ikenberry and his coaching staff have announced the early signings of three players to the VMI Baseball Class of 2014.  Each of the three hail from the Commonwealth, as the class consists of Connor Bach (Clifton, Va./Centreville), Berkley Hawkins (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and Campbell Henkel (Richmond, Va./ St. Christopher’s).

VMI releases 2010 Slate


VMIStadium LEXINGTON, Va.- The VMI baseball program has announced its 2010 schedule, one that includes 35 home games against just 20 road tests for the upcoming season.

Highlights of the home schedule include visits from 2009 College World Series participant Virginia (April 14), along with in-state rivals Virginia Tech (April 27), Longwood (April 6), James Madison (April 7), Richmond (May 11) and VCU (May 19).  Also included will be Big South matchups against Coastal Carolina (April 23-25), Winthrop (May 14-16), Radford (April 30-May 2), Charleston Southern (March 26-28) and Presbyterian College (May 20-22).

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Seth Baldwin connected on two of No. 1 North Carolina’s season-best five home runs, and the Tar Heels’ pitching staff carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning Tuesday in a 17-0 win over Princeton at Boshamer Stadium.
